If you do own a Weyr or other RP site and need similar lineart, though, I may be able to make one for you. However, I am not cheap, sorry.
But, I wanted to show off the lineart I made for the Pern RP I'm working on with a group of neat-o folks I know. So here's a few of my dragons, plus one I made that's up for RP by someone else. Vanoth's markings are loosely based on my corn snake's, while Lirth is based on a tiger shark. Zarth and Cerisath are both examples of the pied dragons we added in (we're semi-canon, so we do such awesome things like add pretty markings).
If you're up for some Dragonriders of Pern RP, swing on by. We're pretty friendly, and rated roughly PG-13. :P

Yeah, obviously in fandom people want their dragons to be different visually from each other, heh. We have some limitations to keep people from going too crazy and don't want people adding cutie marks or the like in the game I'm staff on. It does seem kind of likely that they'd have some variation in color -- just have to look at a naturally occurring creatures, as they're not all identical either. :D
Way more fun this way too, haha.

I agree with you, but there's that part of me that screams in my head "but.. but but but that's the way Anne wrote them D:" XDD So, part of me likes the idea, but there's that part that twitches at the idea. :3 As for tonal variations, I could see that, especially because for th emost part, a solid color is nearly impossible in nature, so who's to say genetically engineered fire lizards would be any different? :3 and I can imagine so; cutie marks would be kinda wierd and almost aneurysm material for those who are "by the book"-ies. :3
But yeah, interesting designs! Though a bit of a stretch from the cover arts I remember on the originals I had. <3 Still nice to see! :3

We're a LOT stricter about what coloring variations and markings are allowed than the vast, vast majority of Pern fansites I've seen out there, actually ;) (and have had people complain so, to boot.) It's kinda crazy.
I agree that I always envisioned the dragons as solid-colored, too, from the books, and I think that's what Anne intended. Anne was actually pretty inconsistent on all sorts of things, though... even as a kid I remember more nitpickily noticing the amazing disappearing-and-reappearing dragon ear[flap]s that Canth twitched X) The cover art on al the books is REALLY off the canonical description Anne ended up going with (and varies greatly from book to book too) on every book except the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern and even there it apparently gets the tails wrong. ...lol.
Too, having a little more variation than a bunch of identical sold-blue dragons really helps in RP forums, I think, and helps keep the dragons from feeling like an army of clones.

Finding comments several years late aw ye. I did just look through my collection of dragons and it doesn't look like that's one in my saves unfortunately. Though TBH it's been long enough I forget who the heck half the dragons belong to, haha. I SHOULDA PUT PLAYER NAMES ON THEM
