When I was 10 and rather pious -piety never stopped anyone from being mean though- I tried to face St. Nikolaus and his Krampus companion with honesty about me not having been nice enough to get any treats. "I don't want to lie to a holy man (or in this case the guy who plays a holy man in a ceremony/ritual)," I thought and these treats weren't good enough offerings to encourage lying. My honesty got rewarded with the Krampus(-actor) threatening me with a beating should I respond to St. Nikolaus's question with anything but "I've been a (very) good boy this year. Now gimme treats please!"
I didn't realise until much later how this pattern of hypocrisy has pervaded a lot of aspects of my society.
