This is study I did of the Anubis statues from old King Tut's tomb. I did it as research for Anubutts and I just felt like drawing it.
There is one thing that has recently started to bug me about it. Everyone refers to this and other statues like it as being examples of Anubis who is physical described as being a jackal. While the egyptians often represented people in a very stylized form, they portrayed animals with enough accuracy that distinctive species can be indentified. So why does this look more like an egyptian pharoh hound and almost nothing like any jackal I've seen?

Yeah, my assistant manager at work has done actual classes at some of the museums on the subject of Ancient Egypt, and he is of the same opinion. Too much faith is placed on the writings of people from places like Ancient Greece who never set foot outside their countries. Then later on other people accepted way too much their writings as the gospel without checking the sources.
Well, the Pharoh hound or a dog similar to can be found on tomb walls. It does not look like the non morphic version of Anubis that we see in sculpture and papyrus. Plenty of argument about why the non morphic Anubis has little resemblence to the Golden Jackal, which is the jackal of Egypt.
Excellent rendering of the Tutenkamen statue. It's one of my all time favourite sculptures and it was a real thrill to get to see it in real life when I was in Egypt.
