The Aethernauts were mages and scholars that took a great interest in the world outside the world. That is to say, they explored the boundaries of reality.

Far away from the center of civilization, where the air became thin and land began to lose substance, the Aethernauts boldly trekked in search of knowledge. For reasons unknown, many never returned. Those who lived closest to the Aether often blamed the 'nauts for the resurgence of strange beasts and bizarre peoples who came in from the strange realms beyond reality.

One such Aethernaut, newly trained and full of zeal, boldly stepped out into the twisted reality and learned that there was some truth to the accusations of the locals.
