This is one of several drawings I did for an attack chopper design. I wanted a design that didn't immediately look like some NATO copter that had been reworked so I went with coaxial design instead. With the exception of some work done by Hiller in the early 50's the main proponent of the coaxial has been Kamov in Russia. Even then his designs have been primarily restricted to naval applications in the form of the NATO codename Helix and Hormone classes. In the 90's he proposed the the single seat KA50 attack heliocopter, but was unable to apparently overcome the workload issues of the singel seat cockpit. This combined with the end of the Cold War and the tightening of purse strings in Russia killed the idea. Recent attempts to to develope a two seat version has apparently not brought much interest.

Actually, both the KA50 and KA52 are in service in the Russian Army, they saw combat missions during the Chyena war, along with Mi-24 Hind Ds and Mi-28 Havoc attack choppers.
Nice concept, the Coxial rtoro idea something that is extremly effective. You dont need a second tail rotor and you can lift great weights then with convetional rotor layouts.

Well, Purin increased the Defense budget several times since he is in office, so you can assume that some KA50s where buyed. Also, no real pics exist for several reasons.
Wehn you test a weapon ina unpopular war, you didnt want to have any pics of it. Same goes for the TOS-1 Burito, who fires incendiary fule rockets and so on.

Yeah the KA50 saw a lot of service time durring the war in Cheyna, seen one in Afganistan flying around, but the magiry of the fleet is M24N and P verssions, even seem some that had fixed landing gear. there was a concept chopper that matches that design very closely might have pics of it under testing in the windtunnel somepalce. Another one of Kamaovs babies.
This design seems to be on the right track, but without a longer tailboom it would be highly unstable, especially when turning or rotating.
Another consideration would be to eliminate one of the rotors --- you read that right, you can eliminate one of the rotors! The NOTAR (NO TAil Rotor) concept has been used successfully in at least one production helicopter; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOTAR
It's also worth noting that this technology is time-tested, as various NOTAR helicopters have been built and flown since at least 50 years ago. Don't just take MY word for it, check out this article and pan down until you see the first helicopter photo... http://www.geocities.com/transformationunderfire/
Also consider that if some toy remote-controlled helicopters have neither a tail rotor, nor ANY SUBSTITUTE, this might also be applicable to manned helicopters.

Ive been reading your posts on a majority of barons tech work and I gotta ask somthing, Were you born a argumentive know it all or did you have to take a class or somthing? I mena how about enjoying the peice for its artistic merit isntead of quoting techinical data or picking on the artist for his desighns. its just art it only has toplease the artist and possible theperson who comissioned it. were very fortunate that Baron is kind enough to paost his work here.
My posts to Baroncoon's gallery were posted to provide constructive criticism, and are not to be mistaken for harassment.
The above helicopter design concept is unquestionably a work of art, but it is also an aircraft design, and such designs by nature must be able do perform the tasks that are required of them. It's perfectly acceptable, even laudable, for an aircraft to be pretty, but it should also be safe to fly --- function must ALWAYS take precedence over form in an aircraft design.
I also understand that this design is only concept art for a work of fiction, but more practical designs in fiction always garner the most respect (from from people who work with and/or study said works) for the creator --- it shows that the creator of the design put a lot of effort and/or skill into his work. Knowing this, I would have been irresponsible to NOT criticise flaws (whether real or imagined) in Baroncoon's designs, because if I were in his shoes, I would rather get told off by someone who knows what time it is than build castles in the sky while everyone smiles and waves.
In short, I'm trying to help Baroncoon, not mock him.
And since we're on the subject of "picking on" people, YOU certainly aren't doing the artist any good by telling us, on Baroncoon's "behalf", what the purpose of his art is, and on his own page at that. If he has a problem with my posts, he can send a note to me, block me, or report me to admin --- what he doesn't need is a fanboy riding in on his not-so-high horse, complaining about routine civilised criticism using continuously degrading spelling, capitalization, and grammer.
That's my position, and for the record, I never said you would like it.

What your suceeding in doing is coming off as a know it all theres avery fine line between constructive critisim and being a jerk. And I admit I was bing rather blunt in his defense. Artists and freinds stick up for each other.

Ok folks! This where the bartender pulls the shotgun out from under the bar and puts a load of blue whistler into rafters to get both your attention!
Now this Jace I happy you feel supportive of me and my art but mind your manners.I'm not made of glass. If I can't take some criticism from the public gallery I got no business claiming to be a professional.
Likewise Blacktail never claim to be aeronautical engineer just an informed concept designer. Therefore since my designs do not have to have to fly anywhere but on the surfaces of the art I do. If you feel compelled to publish doctarates on the principles of aviation I recommend Aviation Week.If all you can find is negative things about my work then maybe it is not your thing. No one has forced you to view it. The important thing to me is that my clients many who are actual people in the aviation/ military community rather supportive of my work.
This is suppose to casual thing I'm doing in spare time, and to be honest it should be to for you guys. I don't want to block anyone but I will if folks can't be polite! For what it is worth this my chunk of virtual turf and around here I'm top dog! Understood.
