What's funny about the oni is that they're often superficially compared to Western demons because of the red skin color, horns, pointed ears and loincloth. But yet, within Japanese folklore, the oni may be better compared to Western orcs, ogres and trolls. Japanese demons tend to be a lot scarier-looking than Western demons/devils.
So given that, I wonder why the Western devil or demon has not been fully rehabilitated as a less-"evil" creature of legend, like Hellboy for instance. I'd think he'd make a great "oni"-like character.

I often compared oni to orcs a lot, due to the occasional "tusk" designs that are more prevalent than the more-teeth-than-the-Osmund-family designs. To simply describe them I'd usually say they're technicolor orcs with horns and claws x3
since from what I've seen in various anime they could come in more than just red, but blue or green or even purple.
Though you hit the nail on the head though, that more than often, in dubbed anime, they refer to oni as ogres other than the other few times where they're just flatly called demons.
I think what makes them more scarier than western ones, is that western never seems to have really really specific or diverse ones demons, whereas Japan and the far east in general all have rich mythological and folkloric creatures, THOUGH influenced from the west in some. A lot of the world essentially shares a lot of the same folklore's and creatures even if under different names or a different coat of paint.
