It's... another summary of art activity, done just a few hours shy of 2011 turning into 2012 here at Te Whare Mayfurr.
I think it's fair to say that 2011 for me was The Year of the (Wacom) Tablet!
January: Finishing some pinup pictures originally sketched in December at FurcoNZ 2010. While I was well into using the tablet at this stage, it was mostly using the same techniques as the mouse for digital inking and colouring in GIMP.
February: Started branching out into more digital composition of backgrounds et al, as on this picture of Super Collie.
March: This kiriban picture for
smegog of his character Psyker encountering Super Collie was a marvellous challenge for me, and I'm very proud of how it came out. I learned a heck of a lot about composition, digital painting and colouring while doing this piece, and I still consider it one of my best works.
April: This month's highlight was doing a digital rendition of Delilah entirely in ArtRage 2.6 - without floodfills, gradients, masks and other GIMP-like tricks of the trade. Hard work, but I learned more about applying colours and working on a minimum number of layers.
May: Featuring the return of the big and buxom Freda, I was also combining the use of ArtRage and GIMP for separate elements of artworks - ArtRage for backgrounds and GIMP for picture colouring and final composition. It was about this time I got the GIMP Paint Studio set of brushes and presets, which I wouldn't be without now!
June: Creating "Avenging Angel" was Just. Bloody. Awesome. Fun. Have been getting a lot of inspiration from "ImageFX" magazine during this year.
July: Dark Collie got a revamp, and I got more confident in using the tablet with the "Airbrush" tool for highlights and shading.
Due to lack of interest and art content, August was cancelled and replaced with an extended July to fit in more Freda...
September: Finally finished off a long in-progress Delilah picture after a lengthy creative drought.
October: Getting back into the art groove thing again...
November: After actually paying MONEY for art software (ArtRage Studio), I had another go at an GIMP-less picture featuring Dark Collie. The "Smoothed Inks" feature of AR Studio was very useful, but I still found the simulated traditional media a challenge!
December: Another FurcoNZ trip, and my first commission in yonks for
kiera_the_beagle! Fully inked and coloured in GIMP, including the background! A lot of other sketches and stuff done this month, which I've been steadily working through.
