lol seems every 4th furry I see is a DJ these days :P Im more of a live concert sound guy but do many weddings and events with my PA system and a simple DJ mixer with two audio outputs coming from virtual DJ, I keep it simple and just play the music people request hehe

That's fine for what you're doing, as there are different kinda of DJs. I just say do whatever you are comfortable with, and don't let what other people say bother you. In my mind, the most important aspect of club/rave DJing is the tracks you choose, the order you put them in, and how you mix them together. I have more respect for a person that does that properly than someone who has 6 grand worth of equipment but trainwrecks the mix lol Believe me, it does happen, and it makes me sad lol
