Sakura pulled her kimono tighter around herself as she exited the greenhouse, the cold air hitting her swiftly and causing her to shiver. She could see her breath as it rose above her in small clouds. It was a typical chilly winter evening, complete with a layer of snow on the ground that had fallen a few days before. Despite the cold, Sakura loved being outside, and she had taken a few minutes now to break from her studies to get some fresh air.
She entered the garden, padding silently across the stone pathway. As she rounded the corner, she was surprised to find a pink-furred wolfess leaning against the wall, staring straight at her and smiling ever so slightly. Sakura had never seen her before, but assumed she worked at the Manor. Approaching the shewolf, she smiled.
“Hi,” she said to the stranger, “I’m Sakura.” She leaned against the wall a few paces from the wolf, still smiling sweetly, but feeling just a little shy.
“Maraschino,” said the wolfess. “Pleased to meet you Sakura.” She wagged her tail a bit, her wings opening and closing slowly. She seemed friendly enough. Sakura took notice of her clothing…or lack thereof, and asked “Aren’t you cold? I’m freezing and I’m wearing twice as much as you.”
Maraschino chuckled. “Not at all,” she said. “The cold hardly bothers me darling. Normally I wear even less than this, but some of the guests here at the manor enjoy fancy outfits and such.”
Sakura nodded her head. “Do you work here then? I’ve never seen you before.”
Maraschino grinned again. “I suppose you could say I work here, yes. From time to time. Though I do not live here; I merely visit when I feel inclined to do so. Mother gets awfully displeased with me at times.” She smiled impishly then, her red eyes twinkling.
It was true, Mother had quite a temper. Sakura was a bit afraid of the woman, though she had seen her demonstrate kindness enough times to know she wasn’t as scary as she made herself out to be.
A gust of wind blew through the trees suddenly, chilling Sakura to the bone. Maraschino hardly blinked. “I should probably be going back inside soon, before I freeze to death. Its so cold out here, but I love the garden. Mother tells me its beautiful in the spring, when the cherry trees are in full bloom.”
“Aye,” said Maraschino, “That is is. One of my favorite places to visit, when the branches are covered in little pink flowers. Something tells me you’ll enjoy it too,” she said, winking at Sakura. The little pink kitsune smiled, her bobtails wagging.
“I think perhaps I may have something that would help tie you over until then though, if you’d like. Might help warm you up too, for a moment.” She held out her hand. Sakura blinked as a small blue spark appeared within the wolf’s palm, growing larger until it was a flame, and then a small fire, suspended in the air a few inches above Maraschino’s hand. She watched in awe as the flames took the shape of a large cherry blossom, warmth emanating from the glowing flower.
Maraschino smiled sweetly, holding the fire between them for a moment. Sakura raised her paws up to warm her fingers, so fascinated by the spectacle that she never took her eyes from it. After a few minutes, Maraschino waved her hand and the flames disappeared, returning the garden to darkness.
“How did you do that?” Sakura asked, clearly impressed.
“Magic,” answered Maraschino. “I am Fae darling.”
Sakura was familiar with faeries. The manor had many of them living on the grounds, and she’d even met a few. Mother had warned her to be cautious around them, for they were full of trickery. This one seemed harmless though, for now.
“Fire is my specialty,” Maraschino said, delighted that Sakura was so impressed. “Someday, little one, you will be able to do things like this. Has anyone told you?”
Sakura tipped her head to one side in confusion. “Told me what?” she asked.
Maraschino giggled. “You are a Kitsune, no? Your kind is much like my own, known for its tendency to play games with mortals. Something tells me they’ve tried to keep that from you sweetie. Probably to save themselves a few headaches later on. That doesn’t surprise me in the least.” She picked up a small pebble and tossed it up at the windows, grinning when it bounced loudly off the glass, causing Mother to open the window and glare down at them. The old woman began scolding Maraschino in her native tongue, and Maraschino giggled.
“We should go inside Sakura. I don’t understand a word of what she’s saying but I imagine a lot of it has to do with getting back to work.” She looked up at Mother one more time and stuck out her tongue. Turning to the young girl, she whispered, “If you’d like, I can help you bring out your hidden talents. Meet me in the forest when you can, and I’ll help you discover what you can really do. It’ll be fun.” She winked and turned to go inside before Sakura had a chance to answer, her tail swishing back and forth with her amusement. Sakura followed her quickly, not wanting to incur Mother’s wrath any more than she already had. She wasn’t sure what Maraschino planned to teach her, but she had no doubt it would be much more fun than what she’d learn in her textbooks.

Another lovely piece for
of his darling Kitsune Sakura’s first encounter with me. Sakura is much too young to be a potential playmate, but that’s not going to stop me from causing a bit of mischief with her anyway. ;)
