Like most Saturniids, the adults live for about a week as they cannot eat.

This one had a five inch wing span. They don't tend to get much bigger than that.

They have to be. They have to survive off only their body stores during their entire lifespan.

Yeah. Don't they overwinter in the caccoon, like alot of other large moths?

They will if they pupate at that time of the year. Sometimes you'll get multiple broods a year. In the Spring and Summer, they don't pupate for long, but if they pupate in the Fall or Winter they wait for the warmer time.

My god...how big can they get???
I remember finding a huge one when I was 13, my mom was amazed by it's size (with spread wings it was more than 20 cm wide)

The wingspan on imperial moths typically tops out at a bit over 17cm

Hehe, they always do. :)

This particular moth doesn't seem to occur in Europe, but other large silkmoths are found all over the world. So, who knows how big what you saw may have been ;)
