what was the method used to associate corresponding elements with characters?

I'll use mine as an example [the green skunk with blue hair]

The number 18 is my age...we were allowed to choose any number
the letters MA are the first two letters of Marbles, which is how everyones was
And the numbers 2011.03.02 was a date we were allowed to pick.
Mine was when me and my mate got together.

So theres no real scientific rhyme or reason too them, just preference [:
