From everything I've heard, their reputation of stubbornness is due to their intelligence. Unlike a horse, their first reaction is to freeze and access a situation. You can't make them do something if they feel isn't safe for them or the humans with them.
They are also very friendly and gentle. For all the abuse and neglect the donkeys I met yesterday have suffered, they gave me a chance and showed me only kindness and friendship in return.
