I wish the survey had a section of what I *don't* want it to do.
For example, I want to be able to control my thermostat and my lights. I *DON'T* want utility companies or government agencies to be able to. You don't like that I have my thermostat set for 68 degrees during peak usage in a 103 heat wave? TOUGH! My decision, not yours! You want to charge me extra for using more wattage during peak times, fine! Just don't make my decisions for me.

Well of course it would run on some minimal/server OS. The system i'm building is written in java and runs on ubuntu server on a fanless x86 mini itx board. Of course an ARM system would be better, but since i rely on some software and drivers that aren't available for ARM yet, I'll stick to x86 for now!
Completed the survey for 'ya! I do AMX automation programming at times for various Fortune 500's, so I have a fair bit of experience with automation possibilities. Contrastingly, however, I just simply have no desire for it in my own home beyond perhaps tracking metrics for power usage, and possibly some easier set-points for temperature based on outside conditions and occupancy. For me, I guess the automation just offers no real significant advantages beyond a "gee whiz" factor. I suppose part of that may be a result of having played enough on the bigger systems we've installed and I've gotten it out of my system. I'm not OPPOSED to it having, mind you, just not an "OMG must have!" item at the moment. Who knows, though! My opinion is subject to change, usually based on spare time and budget. :)
Good luck with your thesis project!!
