Chapter 1
A new beginning
As a wolf, living for seven years is a long time. I grew up in a forest in Canada that’s name escapes me because it’s been so long since I’ve been there. My name is Micah, I am a tall, very muscular wolf with grey streaked black fir and deep amber eyes, and apparently I am quite attractive due to so many lady wolves asking me to be their mates, but I never really found the right one, well, except for once. Anyway, I am now the leader of a pack in Yellowstone national park, have been for four years. But I’ve not always been the leaderly type. I was born and raised in Canada by my mother and father. I was born to become the leader of the pack but at heart I was always playful never taking things seriously like an alpha wolf must. But my father still raised me as an alpha. He taught me how to hunt and be a leader and my heart was never really in it but I still learned how to do it just to please him.
I ended up running away, but that’s another story for another night.
I ran and ran for over two years surviving as a lone wolf traveling south in the hopes of finding warmer weather and soon realized how glad I was for the training I had even though if I never had it I would still be with my family cracking jokes to my friends and living the relatively easy life as a pack boy omega. I was a good hunter for a lone wolf because I was so strong. But one day when I was trying to take down a caribou I got a little careless, as I was about to jump on a caribou I was chasing I got myself kicked in the head knocking me out instantly.
I came to a while later, knowing I was lucky to still be alive, to what was the most beautiful wolf I have ever seen nudging me with her nose to see if I was alive. Seeing her and the concern in her deep blue eyes I fell in love with her instantly. She was pure white and strong with a beautiful slender face that made me think she was an angel, but I soon realized she wasn’t and I wasn’t dead because I felt an incredible throbbing pain just over my left eye.
“Are, are you ok?” she asked in the smoothest most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
“I think so, but my head hurts like, well like getting kicked in the head to be honest”
“He he he, you’re pretty funny,” she said
“So I’ve been told.” I said
“Do you think you can stand up?” she asked in a genuinely concerned voice.
“I think so.” I replied
“So, what happened to you out there?” She asked as we began walking to a river, which is well known to me because I had lived in this particular area, known as Yellowstone National Park, for about three months or so.
“I got a little lazy and got myself kicked in the face.” Just then remembered the huge gash sitting just above my left eye, still dripping red blood down my face, and realized how much pain I was in. I must have made a face because she stepped in front of me to stop me and began examining the wound.
Then she said “You got hit pretty bad, why don’t you tell me where your pack is and I can help you get back to ‘em”
“Right, are you willing to follow me all the way up to northern Canada.” I mumbled angrily
“You’re from Canada, eh.” She said in a joking voice.
“Ha ha ha, very funny.” I said mockingly as dunked my head in the ice cold river. We had just arrived it “YOW that is cold” I yelled
“Here, let me help you” She said as she began licking the wound clean, which tickled it a little bit making the pain temporarily go away.
She then asked if I would like to rest at her den until I got all healed up to which I replied “That would be great, thanks” once she finished cleaning up my injury we began the long journey back to her den. After what seemed like hours of walking in complete silence we finally arrived.
“By the way, my name is Micah” I said as we settled into separate corners of the semi small cave that was really just a hole in a mountain.
“I’m Akela.” She said
A beautiful name to fit a beautiful wolf I thought to myself as she closed her eyes and began falling asleep. As I heard her breathing slow down, signifying she was asleep, I decided to go outside and look at the sky for a while, because, well, I guess don’t really know why I like staring at the stars, I just do, so I traveled for a few minutes at a slow trot until I found a nice little hill with a rock ledge on it that had a beautiful view of the entire sky, there were so many stars and the moon was beautiful. And as I was sitting on that lonely little rock, I thought to myself “Is she the one, could this be the girl I’ve been waiting for” and all of a sudden, with the stars and the beautiful, nearly full moon, I got a strong urge to howl, so I howled, a strong, beautiful howl, hoping I had found the one. Then as I finished I realized how loud I was and hoped I didn’t wake Akela.
As I walked back to the den I saw her sleeping peacefully in the bright light given off by the nearly full moon and she looked stunning, So I walked as quietly as I could so as not to disturb her back to my side of the den and laid down and suddenly realized how incredibly tired I was after such hard day and I gratefully fell into a deep sleep.
Chapter 2
A newfound love
The next morning I woke up not knowing where I was and I felt a deep pain above my left eye, then all of my memories of the previous day flooded back to me.
Just then Akela walked up with a big smile on her beautiful face. “I brought breakfast” she said and I got up and saw a large caribou that was obviously a fresh kill.
“Wow, I am impressed” I said “Did you take that down all by yourself?”
“Wow, you are dumber than I thought” she said “Of course I did, do you see any other pack members nearby that would have helped me”
“Head wound” I said in a joking way pointing at the large dried over gash on my head
“He he he, you are funnier than most lone wolves, what’s your story?”She asked
So as we were eating the caribou she brought I told her about where I grew up and the kind of wolf I am and I told her that I ran away, but not why.
“So why did you run away?” she asked with what appeared to be genuine curiosity
So since she was purely curious and not trying to find ways to tease me like some other wolves do, I decided to tell her. So I started the story with, “Well, one day, me and my dad where out on a hunt, I was about one year old at the time, and I let a caribou get away because I was being lazy so of course He had to lecture me about how I never take things seriously and how lucky I am to be born into such an honorable family and so on, I had had enough of it. I didn't want to pretend anymore so my dad and I got into a big fight and it ended in me running away.
When I was finished she said “Wow, you have been through a lot.”
I just shrugged then said jokingly “So now that you know so much about me I need to know about your deep, dark past.
“Oh, you don’t wanna hear my story it’s not very interesting” She said with her head down.
“No really I do, I like to know where people come from.” I said wishing I hadn’t said the deep, dark past thing because it seemed, by her reluctance to tell her story, that it really may have been deep and dark.
When she said nothing I decided she would tell me when she was ready. So I changed the subject and asked her what she does for fun around here.
“Well there isn’t really much to do” she said still sounding a little depressed and I felt kind of bad for bringing it up at all.
Then I asked “Hey, are you up for a bit of a walk?”
“Sure, I didn’t have any plans for the day so I guess we can go for a walk”
So we went out and I led and she followed and we traveled for about two and a half hours in complete silence until we eventually arrived at the final destination. It was at the top of a beautiful mountain with an incredible view of the beautiful pine-tree-covered-mountains for miles around. There was also a hot spring that bubbled out of the mountain and a snow melt creak flowing at a slow trickle and eventually meeting up and pooling where I built a small dam a couple months back. “I have been here many times since I arrived in Yellowstone a few months ago; I come to relieve stress and just to relax. And as far as I can tell nobody else knows about this place at all.”
“Wow, it’s beautiful up here.” She said in a bit of a happier mood,
“Yeah, beautiful” I said looking at her and was rewarded with the sweetest smile I have ever seen. “So you see how the two streams meet up a few yards down that way and then form a little pool?” I asked
“Yeah” she said
“Well there is the perfect Place to sit and relax, not too hot, not too cold.” I explained
So we relaxed in the nice warm water in complete silence for about ten minutes before she finally said, “well I guess since you are being so kind to me and you have already told me about your past I guess I should tell you about where I come from”
As she began explaining her story you could tell it wasn’t shame holding her back from the start but fear of history repeating itself.
So she began her story with “I grew up in Canada just as you did, I think it was in the north east but I can’t be sure. From the start it was apparent that I would one day take over my family’s pack. As a young puppy I would, as opposed to most, hunt squirrels and rabbits when most of my friends would just play around. On the occasion that I would play with my friends, I would take charge and enforce teamwork as a leader must do. Whenever my team would play against other teams we would always win. As I got older I became big enough to hunt full size animals. I was always the leader of the hunt teams. But as I was just approaching the age of one year I was taken by humans from my home, they brought me here to Yellowstone and set me free and I have been living as a lone wolf for about two years since.”
“Wow, that must have been hard for you to just stay here and not try to return back to your pack,” I said
“It was a very difficult decision, but I had no way of knowing how far it was and if there was any chance of me surviving the long journey.”
“Why didn’t you at least try to join another pack or even try to create your own?” I asked
“Well no other packs would take me in out of fear that I would try to take over as their leader, and for good reason too. And the reason I never tried to create my own is because I never found the right mate.”
And the way she looked at me and smiled when she said that last sentence I instantly knew she had the same feelings I had for her from the first time we met.
So after sitting in the warm water for about two hours talking about our families and old friends we hadn’t seen in years and things like that we began the long walk back to her den.
By the time we got back to the den it was dark and the full moon was beginning to rise. It was turning out to be a very cold night and though it would have been nice to cuddle up next to Akela for warmth, and because I love her, but mostly for warmth, instead I decided to be a gentleman and leave the decision up to her. So I walked over to my side of the den, laid down gave a sweet smile to her and closed my eyes. Sure enough just moments later I heard her walk up and lay down next to me and I felt the lovely warmth of her body against mine and I instantly knew that she was, and forever will be, the love of my life.
Chapter 3
News from distant lands
The next morning I was woken up by the sun in my eyes. As I opened them I saw Akela’s beautiful face and noticed her nose pressed up against mine and I smiled a very happy smile. As I did I saw her deep blue eyes open and notice the same thing I did and gave one of her bright and incredibly sweet smiles. We where both in paradise.
Just then we both heard a noise outside the den, a twig being broken under the heavy paw of a potentially hostile wolf approaching. We both jumped to our feet and melted into the shadows of the den as quickly, and quietly, as possible. As the unknown wolf approached the den I jumped out and tackled him to the ground, obviously surprised by the wolf that just jumped out of nowhere at him he began fighting back.
“Guys, Guys! STOP!” Akela yelled. Now I probably would not have stopped attacking an intruding wolf for anyone well except Akela, so since it was her I backed off but still kept a close eye in the intruder.
“Sorry Micah, this is my idiot brother Koda. She said “he was taken here with me but I haven’t seen him in months, I had hoped he had fallen off a cliff or something.” She said in a disgusted voice.
“Gees Akela, your boyfriends just keep getting more and more protective, the last one only threatened to kill me.” Koda said
To which Akela responded “Don’t listen to him Micah, he’s just trying to make you jealous I have never had any boyfriends but you. Well, that is, if you…” she said awkwardly.
“Don’t worry I am.” I said still keeping a close eye on koda who just couldn’t stop laughing.
“Shut up moron. I am tempted to still let Micah kill you so watch your mouth” Akela said with so much hatred even I got a little scared.
Once we had all regrouped at the den Akela asked “So Koda, what are you doing here?”
“Well, a few months ago I heard about a place that has so many caribou they have to run some of them off their land just to make room for their growing pack. So of course I had to check it out. Ironically enough the area of land was completely without caribou and the pack that lived there was slowly dying. So, being the helpful kinda guy I am, I helped them find a new place to live.” Koda said with a lot of self pride.
Akela then told me “Which in Koda’s language means, ‘I found nothing so I tried to come back but got lost for a while.’ She said with a pretty good impression of Koda but with a little bit of an idiot accent mixed in.
“Say what you will,” Koda said, “at least I am trying to do something with my life instead of living as a lone wolf likely to die alone at an early age.”
“Ugg, you are sooo annoying” Akela said standing up to go force Koda out of her den.
“No no no, wait,” he said as Akela began pushing him out. “I do have actual news” Akela stopped and sat down to let him continue. “I’m just kidding” he said
Then Akela barked at him with incredible anger “Oh my gosh! You are so obnoxious! GET OUT!”
And then he ran off with a big smile on his face and laughing.
“I am so sorry about that, I haven’t seen him in months and thought that maybe he had found a pack or at least moved to a different area or something, I really am sorry.” Akela said after koda left seeming really embarrassed.
Since she seemed so embarrassed I fought back the urge to come up with a witty comeback as I would have in most situations “It’s ok, really.” “So do you think he was telling the truth?”
“About what part, the pack dying or his helping them” she asked
“About the pack dying” I said
“With him it is difficult to tell, but I would say that was probably mostly a true story up to the helping them part.” She said
“Well maybe we should go try to help them.”I said
“How would we help them, it’s not like we can bring our caribou to them, and we defiantly can’t let them move into our territory, there is a lack of food is with so many lone wolves in the area” she said
“Yeah you’re probably right” but I decided that if I ever did come up with an idea I would defiantly consider it.
Chapter 4
Unfamiliar smells
The next few weeks went as usual for a pair of pack-less wolves, except for the fact that we are madly in love and spent virtually every moment together of course.
“I’m going to get some breakfast, want to come or do you want to rest?” Akela asked one morning as I began yawning myself awake.
“What do you think?” I asked in a voice that meant “duh”.
“Fine, be a smart mouth, but it will come back and bite you in the backside someday” she said jokingly.
So we left and we were hunting and I just kind of got a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, like something bad was about to happen, so I was sure to be extra alert.
“Do you ever get a bad feeling in your gut that something bad is about to happen?” I asked with interest.
“So you feel it to?” she asked in a tense voice
“Yeah, I’m not sure what it is but I just got this feeling, ya know” I replied
As we were talking a large caribou walked up about twenty yards away from us, So Akela said “Maybe we should take this down and eat then head back to the den for a while.”
“Ok, I like the sound of that” I replied so we where sneaking up and about to attack the caribou when four other wolves jumped out of nowhere just as we did and the caribou managed to get away unharmed.
“Who are you and why are you on our territory scaring away all our caribou!” I barked angrily.
“Oh I’m sorry,” one of them said in a snobby voice that showed he was obviously from out east where the caribou are plentiful. “We were just passing through and got hungry”
“Right” Akela said not buying one bit of it, seeming to know more than I did. “This is our territory and you should know that”
“Who are you anyway, you don’t smell familiar at all” I asked with a bit of anger in my voice, and I could see that it scared him a bit, like I said, I’m a pretty big wolf, I can be intimidating if I need to be.
“Like I said” he said in his easy life snobby accent, “We were just passing through and we got hungry.”
“Well you better keep movin” Akela said “Now” she said in a deep dangerous growl.
And with that that they sauntered off not seeming very intimidated.
Back at the den we started talking about the events that just happened.
“So who where those wolves, they didn’t smell familiar” I said
“I know them” Akela said, sounding grim, “They are from jasper national forest in Idaho, they are thieves and the do it for fun and sport, they just take land and then leave when all the food has run dry, fortunately I’ve had a run in with them before and know how to get rid of them.”
“How many of them are there?” I asked
“There are 32 of them as of one year ago, and they all eat a lot so it won’t take but a few months to kill off all the food here”
“Where have you met them before?” I asked
So with that she began another one of her interesting and well spoken stories “Well it was after I was taken here, only a few weeks really. After many failed attempts at joining other packs I decided to travel to jasper because I heard that there was a lot of packs and lots of food. So I went there and I met up with Dakari, the leader of a pack that was in control of a lot of the territory in jasper. He offered to let me join his, pack on one condition, I would have to be a part of his raiding parties, and before I could refuse he told me all about what they do and why. I kindly refused and just wanted to get out of there as quick as possible. But they wouldn’t allow that seeing as I knew so much about their operation so they gave me two options, stay and help them with other things like hunting and scouting for land, or if I tried to run away, they would hunt me down and kill me. So obviously I chose to stay and decided to join one of their hunting parties.”
“So they forced you to stay?” I asked
“Yep” she said matter-of-factly.
“Wow, you didn’t even try to run away?”I asked, it seemed out of character for her not to try to escape.
“I did, at first, after three failed attempts they took me off hunting and held me as a total prisoner. I was under guard along with four other wolves that where in the same predicament as I was. While I was there, I met a wolf named Zaltana who was taken from her pack by humans and did practically the same thing as me. She was a very tall pure as can be black fir and amber eyes that where either longing for her lost mate, or burning with enough anger and hatred to catch your soul on fire, with nothing in between, luckily I only had to see the burning hatred once, and luckily it wasn’t hatred toward me”
“Wait, wait, wait,” I interrupted
“What” she said, a little angry that I interrupted her story
“Did you say Zaltana?” I asked.
She must have heard the urgency in my voice and quickly responded “Yes, Zaltana, that’s what I said. Why?”
“Wow, I ah…well, we were kind of in love and where going to leave and create our own pack once but we got in a fight and broke up and she got taken away before we could make up, I just assumed she ran away and I haven’t seen her since.” I explained. And as I did I could Akela’s expression soften.
“That was you?” she said seeming to suddenly remember something “She was always talking about how she was in love with someone before she was taken away, that must have been you.”
“Where is she, is she ok” I asked urgently.
“Why, are you two going to get back together?” she asked with a little bit of jealously creeping into her voice
“No actually, we broke up a few days before she was left, and now that I think about it that may actually have been part of the reason I left, I was hoping to find her.” I said with a sad expression.
“Oh, well I’m sorry to tell you this but, Zaltana died.” She said with a great deal of sympathy.
“Oh” I said, not sure how to respond.
So since I didn’t respond she continued her story sensing that I wanted to know how it happened without me having to ask. “So one day we were chatting and wishing we could just get out of there and decided to devise an escape plan. We would wait until they weren’t paying attention and all five of us would run in separate directions. So the day we did the plan ended up with only me getting away and I still feel guilt because I let Zaltana stay and die. When we initiated the plan it started out smoothly, it took them a few minutes for them to even realize we were gone. But once we did, it got really bad. I heard one wolf scream as she got bitten and taken down by an enemy wolf. I knew that we were going to have to fight and wouldn’t get away unnoticed. So me and Zaltana met up and decided to stay together. We heard a wolf running up to us from behind and I increased my pace and didn’t notice Zaltana slow down to confront the wolf, before I even noticed she had slowed down I heard her fighting and I looked back and saw her fending off four wolves. She ended up winning and taking them down but just as she did five more showed up. I yelled for her to run but she stayed and as she looked at me I saw the hatred and anger in her eyes toward those who held her captive for so long. I started running toward her but she yelled for me to run and save myself and before I knew it the five wolves overwhelmed her. So I ran, I ran all the way back here.”
Chapter 5
The Battle
“Just how do you plan to get rid of them?” I asked
“There is only one way I can think of without starting a bloody war likely to end in our defeat…”
“And it is…?” I said expectantly.
To which she responded “We will have to convince the hunting party that we met that there is nothing here worth taking, which may be harder than you think.
“Why is that?” I asked.
“Well” she began “We will have to either convince them that there is nothing here worth taking, or we will have to hurt them enough so that they won’t want to come back and will just report that there was nothing. And somehow I don’t see them believing the first option.”
“Ok, so we beat them up, how hard can that be?” I asked, knowing that both me and Akela where very strong and could very effectively hold our own in a fight.
“It will be harder than you think…” she responded.
So after figuring out a plan, we decided that it would be better to get more wolves on our side. So, very reluctantly, we decided to get Koda to help.
“So basically you two want me to risk my life, just to scare off a few wolves that only maybe will not tell their leader what actually happened?” Koda said to us after explaining the plan to him and telling him that his help would be needed.
“Well, I guess if you put it that way it doesn’t seem very appealing” I responded, staring at the ground, feeling guilty about the fact that I was about to put the wolf I loved and her brother at risk.
“C’mon Koda, you always loved to fight other wolves.” Akela told him, further trying to convince him.
“I never said I wouldn’t do it.” He responded with I big smile on his face.
“So when we find them, how many do you think we will be up against?” Koda asked as we where making our way around, trying to find the group to which we where going to”convince” to leave.
“Well, last time we saw them, there were four of them.” Akela responded
“Yeah, but who’s to say that wasn’t all of them” I responded grimly, still feeling guilty for the danger I was about to put the only family I have into.
We all walked in silence for a while until I began to smell something, it smelled familiar, almost like a dream one is trying to remember but can’t. I heard Akela next to me sniffing the air just as I was, but Koda wasn’t. Just then, I knew exactly what I smelled, and Akela must’ve figured it out just as I did because we both turned to each other and said at the same exact time, “Zaltana”
“Oh my god” I said “Zaltana is alive” I was overjoyed and terrified at the same time. What if she gave in and became one of them, one of the evil wolves who kill for fun.
“Ok” Akela said, more to herself than to me, “We need to keep a cool head and stick with the plan” so we did just that, though I was distracted mentally, I was very prepared physically.
We continued walking for about another half a mile, taking it very slow so as to not alert those we where following if we where to come upon them.
“This is soooo boring” Koda said, much louder than he should’ve “It is taking way too long” and as he said that we heard movement up ahead of us.
“Who’s there?” said a very commanding female voice.
“Zaltana?” I said, immediately recognizing the voice.
“It can’t be.” She gasped as she came out of the brush and looked at me with a soft expression on her face that disappeared immediately. “Micah?” she asked “Is it really you?”
“Yes Zaltana, it’s me” I responded as the four wolves we saw earlier emerged from the brush.
“Well well well” said the leader “You two look familiar” and then Koda stepped out from behind us. As he did so I swear, if only for a second, I saw fear enter the face of their leader, and then immediately disperse back into that stuck-up look he always had on his face.
“We meet again” said Koda with a smirk on his face.
“Indeed” said their leader. “Well anyway, we should be going back to our pack so we can report to Dakari” he said; now bearing the smirk Koda had moments ago. “Zaltana, what do you think” he asked her.
“Well I believe that would be for the best” she said evilly, which made me instantly realize that she had turned over to their side.
I began growling as Akela said “We won’t allow that unless you tell them what we want.”
“What makes you think we will tell him what you…”
But I cut him off before he could finish by tackling him and biting at his chest, trying to do damage without killing him. As I did this I heard other small battles raging on around me. I expected Zaltana to be fighting one of my two other followers, but as I looked to my right I saw her savagely slashing one of the enemy wolves with her teeth.
As I continued to attack the leader I heard Akela scream loudly so I immediately jumped off of the leader and ran over to where she was. I saw her being cut on her chest and stomach really badly by an enemy wolf so I tackled the wolf and savagely tore his throat open, killing him on the spot. As I got off the dead wolf’s body I saw all the other enemy wolves, excluding Zaltana, running away in fear that I was not afraid to kill them.
“And don’t you ever come back!” I yelled fiercely, still pissed off that they would hurt my beloved Akela.
“Are you ok Akela?” I asked, very worriedly as I ran over next to her.
“Yeah, I’m fine” she said as I helper her up “Thanks there, I thought he was going to kill me”
“I can’t imagine losing you” I said, still a little bit worried that she was hurt. “So you are sure you are ok” I asked her one more time.
“Yes, I’m fine” she responded.
Chapter 6
Awkward…
“So” I said after we all regained our wits from the battle we just experienced “What is going on, Zaltana, are you with them or not?”
“I am not” she responded immediately, without thought. “I was waiting for just the right time to escape.”
“So basically you expect me to believe that you lived with them for 5 years and didn’t find a good time to get away?”I asked, not buying it at all.
“Well,” she said, obviously getting ready to tell a story “ I was with them for about six months after the fight. You told him about that right Akela?”
“Yes, I did” Akela responded, still with an appalled expression on her face after finding Zaltana alive.
“Ok, so anyway” she continued, seeming completely calm and not surprised at any of the events that occurred mere moments ago. “I escaped and survived for a couple years on my own and was recaptured. So I decided to try to play along and pretend to be one of them. I became a part of one of the hunting parties and was sent to scout this area. We came and we looked around and decided to go back home and report back. Then you guys came up and, knowing you and knowing Akela, I figured you two together would be willing to raise he** and bring them down so I waited and sure enough, you attacked, so I joined you in hopes that I would get away with it. And sure enough, I did.”
“Hmm” was my only response, and I could see that Akela wasn’t buying it either. The one thing I didn’t like about it was how skimpy she was on the details.
Koda was just sitting next to me and Akela and marveling at Zaltana.
“What are you doing?” she asked him.
“Oh…uh…I was just…”but she cut him off by walking over to the wolf I killed.
“Wow” she said, examining his dead body “You are still a dang good fighter”
“I was just protecting my family” I said, trying to imply that I was taken, just to make sure there wasn’t anything between us anymore.
“Well good job” she said, almost seeming jealous about the fact that Akela and I where obviously together.
As Koda continued to stare at Zaltana, she said to him “So, what’s your name?”
“Uh…I’m…uh…Koda, ya, Koda” he responded awkwardly.
“Well I’m Zaltana” she said, seeming to take a liking to him just as he did her.
As we began walking back to our dens, Akela and I were talking.
“So are you getting the same bad vibes from Zaltana as I am?” I whispered to Akela as Zaltana and Koda were chatting.
“I know what you mean; she was very…non-descriptive…with her explanation.” Was her response.
“I also don’t like how well her and Koda are getting along” and just as I said that Zaltana let out a cute giggle at something Koda said, thus indicating that Koda and her were getting along very well, seeing as Zaltana very rarely laughs.
“Ya,” she said “The thing is, I’m not sure it’s a bad thing for Koda, he’s been…quiet…lately.”
“So Micah” Zaltana said as we were in Akela’s and my den, “What have you been up to lately?”
“Oh nothing much, ya know, just living life is all” I said, not buying her seemingly genuine interest.
“So I see you and Akela met, how’d it happen?” she asked
“It’s none of your business” I said firmly, feeling as though she was trying to get back at me, even though it is extremely obvious that I am taken.
“Ok then…” she said awkwardly and walked out.
Later that night, after Koda invited Zaltana back to his den and they left, Akela and I were talking.
“I have been thinking about it, and I think we should try to find a way to help the pack Koda told us about” I said, snuggling up next to Akela due to the extreme cold of the night.
“Well I don’t know any way we could possibly help them” she asked, seeing where I am coming from with my proposal but, as usual, adding that all important common sense.
“Well maybe if we traveled to where they are and talked to them then maybe, just maybe, we will think about a way to help them.” I said, trying harder to convince her to do it.
“Well I guess tomorrow we will get Koda with us and have him show us where the pack is so we can talk to them.” She said
“Thanks sweetie.” I said, rubbing my muzzle up against her side then resting my head on her side and falling asleep.
Chapter 7
Zaltana’s Treachery
The next morning I slowly began waking up to the warm sun on my eyelids and I noticed Akela was gone, I just assumed she was out getting breakfast so I just laid there for a minute, relaxing in the warm sun peaking through the mouth of the cave to which I reside. As I was laying there I heard something outside and just assumed that it was Akela so I continued to relax there. But as I listened to the heavy footfall of whoever was coming I noticed that something was wrong, it sounded different that Akela’s walking. So I quickly jumped to my feet and tackled whoever was coming without actually seeing who it was.
“Hello there.” Zaltana, who I just tackled and was now laying on top of, said in a sweet voice that almost sounded as if this meant that we were back together. Just then Akela walked up and looked at me angrily and then ran off. I jumped up, glared at Zaltana and said firmly and angrily “Stay away from me” and then chased after Akela.
“Akela! AKELA!” I yelled, winded from trying to catch up to her. Wow she can be fast if she’s angry.
“What!” she growled angrily, turning around to face me and not winded in the slightest, “I thought you said there was nothing between you!” she said, incredibly upset.
“She snuck up on me and scared me” I said softly, trying to apologize. “And I tackled her, thinking she was a hostile wolf.”
“I saw the look on your face” she said, still not buying the truth I was giving her.
“Please believe me” I said, practically begging, well actually completely begging, for her to try to believe me. “If anything, can we get Zaltana’s opinion as to what happened?” I asked, trying to find a way to convince her of the truth.
“Fine” she said “We will just have to ask her what happened” she said, turning her head away from me in a dismissive way.
We began walking toward Koda’s (and now Zaltana’s too I guess, due to the fact that she was staying there) den looking for Zaltana. Akela had been ignoring me the entire 15 minute walk to where Koda’s den was. So I just followed behind Akela looking down at my paws, just really hoping that this would be worked out. As we came up to the den, we found Zaltana and Koda relaxing in their den. I was glad to see Koda there because that would help to prevent Zaltana from lying, or so I hope. As we walked into the den we were greeted by deep growls from both Koda and Zaltana.
“Whoa, whoa, what’s with the hostility?” Akela asked
“Micah attacked me earlier” Zaltana said, her accusation practically dripping with hostility.
“Only because you snuck up on me while I was still half asleep!” I yelled angrily.
“I walked up as I always walk! So I’m sorry if I’m too quiet for you to hear!” She returned, just as angrily. I made a returning comment and eventually Koda, Zaltana, and I were all yelling at the top of our lungs. If anyone would have heard us they would have thought we were a mad wolf pack.
“Hey! HEY! Everyone shut up!” Akela yelled, trying to get everyone quiet, and it worked too.
“Ok, now that I have you all listening.” She said sounding agrivated.
“So Zaltana, the one thing I really care about right now is if whatever happened was “over friendly.”
“Well…” she said as if she was going to lie about it but after getting a surprised and hurt look from Koda. “No, nothing happened” she said, seeming ultimately defeated.
“Ok” Akela said seeming pleased “Now that we have this all settled…for now, we can move on with our lives.”
“Well should we begin our travels to, wherever this pack is?” I asked Akela, a bit less depressed now but still being serious.
“Maybe we should find out where they are but wait until tomorrow to head out.” Akela responded, also sounding a bit more pleased with the situation.
“Ok, so Koda, can you tell us where that pack was?” I asked him
“No,” he said
“Well…Why not?” I asked, completely surprised that he said no.
“Because we will show you where it is.” Koda responded, smiling at Zaltana.
“Ok” I said, slightly displeased that they were coming along but not showing it.
“We’ll start bright and early then!” Zaltana said, excited about the journey that was about to unfold.
Once we got back to the den, I noticed that it was getting very cold.
“Honey, I just want to tell you something.” Akela said to me.
“What is it sweetie?” I asked curiously
“I just wanted to thank you for being ok with my being suspicious about you and Zaltana; I have just been really worried that I would lose you to her.” She said in a concerned voice.
“Don’t worry sweetie, I understand” I said “I mean, given our past, I completely understand where you might be concerned.” I said, giving her a smile. I then stepped forward and began rubbing my muzzle against hers lovingly.
“Thanks honey” She said, lovingly stepping forward and rubbing her side against mine; we were as happy as could be, somehow pulled closer together by the temporary rift between us that Zaltana caused. Being in heaven as we where, it was only to get better. Because as we stood there, side by side, staring out into the beautiful forest. The large moon suddenly popped out from behind a cloud. It was in full bloom. The delicious and intoxicating glow igniting the incredible forest that stood before us into what could have been a raging inferno of pure white light. And standing there, with my beloved Akela beside me, under the enchanting caress that the great light seemed to give us, both Akela and I got a sudden and powerful urge to howl together. So howl together we did. We howled a beautiful story that exclaimed to the world our unending love for each other, we, from that moment on, would be together forever, held by an unbreakable bond that not even death could pull apart. Once we were finished, she gave me one of her big, sweet smiles, telling me that she, just as I was, was in heaven, and I returned the smile with one of my own extravagant smiles.
“That was amazing” she said.
“That was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard” I gushed, unable to hold it in.
She giggled, then responded with “Thanks, you are an incredible howler too”
After we were done howling, we went back into the den, cuddled up tight next to each other, and both had a very restful, good-dream-filled sleep.
Chapter 8
Why is Koda being so suspicious?
“HOWL!!” Koda howled mockingly the next morning.
“Shut up!” Akela and I yelled simultaneously, and hitting him in the head at the same time.
He must’ve heard us howling last night I thought to myself.
“Alright” Akela said, forgetting about Koda’s comment, I could tell she was excited about the trip we were about to embark on. She was so excited because it had been a while since she’d traveled outside of Yellowstone.
“Yep” I said giving her a sweet smile; I wasn’t especially pleased that Koda and Zaltana were coming along, but I didn’t show it because I didn’t want to be a killjoy to Akela and Zaltana.
“So Koda, where are we going anyway?” I asked.
“You’ll find out when we get there” he replied, almost defensively
And his saying that confirmed my suspicion that he was most definitely hiding it for a reason.
“Why won’t you just tell us?” I asked, starting to get slightly agitated at the fact that he was hiding something from me, “Because I am finding it slightly suspicious that you won’t tell us where we are going.” I continued, hoping that I wasn’t taking it too far.
“Ok, ya know what” he yelled suddenly and loudly, causing our whole group to stop walking. “The reason I won’t tell you where we are going is that I don’t feel especially welcome in this group, and I don’t really feel like I have a purpose, so I wanted to be here for a reason, which is leading you to where it is” he explained.
“Koda, even if you told us, we wouldn’t leave you behind if you wanted to come” Akela said reassuringly.
“Yeah, maybe that’s how you feel, but Micah hasn’t been too nice about this whole situation” he said accusingly. Then everyone looked at me expectantly.
“Well what do you want me to say?” I asked, “I was hoping to have some good time alone with Akela. So no, I’m not going to tell you that I am especially happy you are here” then Koda looked at me hatefully and said.
“I knew it, I knew you hated me”
“No Koda, that’s not it at all” I said, wishing that this conversation had never been brought up in the first place. “I don’t hate you”
“Yeah, sure” he said depressed, and then walked back ahead of the group.
“How can I prove I don’t hate him?” I asked Akela quietly after walking in silence for about an hour.
“I don’t know” she said, but I could tell she was thinking. “I guess the best way to convince him is to earn his trust” she said finally.
Earn his trust, how hard can that be I thought to myself.
After walking in complete silence for a while longer I decided I was going to try and apologize to Koda. So I trotted at a faster pace for a minute so I could catch up to him.
“Hi Koda” I said awkwardly. No response. “Well I just wanted to say I’m sorry for acting the way I did earlier.” I said, being completely genuine. My apology was only responded to by a grunt.
“So how long is it to…wherever we are going?” I asked, trying to break the awkward tension that was between us.
“Well at this rate, it is about a week away, but if we can pick up the pace, we can get there within four days” he said, very confident about his estimate.
“Cool, thanks” I said, happy that he was at least talking to me; even if he wasn’t ready to forgive me.
That night, after traveling for a total of about eight hours, it started getting dark, so we decided we should find a place to stay for the night.
“See you two in the morning” I said to Koda and Zaltana, we had found two dens that were spread out for good privacy, but were still close enough so that we could be within reach of each other. Koda and Zaltana trotted off happily to their temporary den. And Akela and I went the opposite direction toward the den to which we were to inhabit for the night.
“I’m not tired” Akela said suddenly, “Why don’t we go somewhere, like just run for a while and be together” she suggested.
I just smiled brightly at her, god she is beautiful in the moonlight. The light given off by the moon that was full just yesterday was glinting off her fur, making it even more pure and white than it already was. She looked back at me and gave me a beautiful smile, her bright blue eyes glowing in the moonlight. “I would love that” I said, then took off running “If you can catch me that is!” I yelled, already a bit ahead of her. She then took off sprinting like an overexcited puppy, she was so cute running like that. She ran extraordinarily fast, caught up to me, and tackled me playfully. We were both rolling together on the ground, paw in paw, laughing like crazy. We eventually came to a stop and were laying on our sides, just staring into each other’s eyes. “I love you so much” I said softly, all the while staring into her deep blue eyes which the moonlight continued to glint off of, making her more beautiful than I thought possible.
“I love you too” she said, then gave me a sweet lick on my nose. We then turned onto our backs and gazed into the stars for what seemed like only a few minutes, but was really hours, and eventually went back to our den and slept happily until the next morning.
Chapter 9
SNOW! Part 1
“Alright, everybody up!” Koda yelled the next morning. I opened my eyes it can’t be morning already I thought to myself while looking around the den that was brightly lit by the morning sun.
“C’mon you two” he said to us, “Why are you two so tired anyway?” he asked.
I responded with a deep growl coming from the back of my throat, he turned and high-tailed it out of our den.
Then I turned my head to see Akela staring at me lovingly.
“He is afraid of you ya know.” She said, seeming proud to have someone bigger than her brother that isn’t afraid to stand up for me. “There aren’t very many wolves out there that scare him”
I smiled back then said “Yeah, well we probably ought to get going shouldn’t we” I said, sad that I had to ruin the moment.
“Yeah, you’re probably right” she responded, her smile going away a little.
We both slowly got to our feet, I watch Akela stretch out her front legs, and boy, was she a beautiful wolf.
“You two look tired” Koda said upon seeing us exit the den, “Did you guys…stay up late?” he asked suggestively.
“Shut up Koda!” we both yelled simultaneously, our voices seeming to make a perfect harmony.
“Awwwww, such a cute couple” he said teasingly.
Once we got walking again I decided to take another chance at getting the location of where we were heading.
“Hey Koda” I said to him, being sure to be out of the hearing range of the girls, they were chatting among themselves anyway. I am glad to see them getting along. “How ‘bout you tell me where we are going? That way you and Zaltana, as well as Akela and I, can get some alone time together, and then we can meet up again once we get there” I said, I wasn’t very good at putting things nicely, I try to get strait to the point.
Koda let out a long sigh “Yeah, I guess you do have a point, I have been wanting a bit of alone time with Zaltana.”
“See, it would benefit us both” I said with a smile.
“Ok, I’ll tell you where it is” he said, pausing for a sec, “But I want Akela to hear it too, I can’t have you two getting lost”
This seemed like a fair enough request so I called Akela up “Hey baby, come here for a sec.” She then trotted up to Koda and I with Zaltana in close tow.
“Me and Micah have been talking” Koda started as he began explaining the situation “And we agreed that it would benefit us all if Zaltana and I, and Micah and Akela, went our separate ways and met up again once we got there”
Akela immediately turned to me and gave me a bright happy smile, glad that I was able to get some alone time without hurting Koda’s or Zaltana’s feelings.
“Ok, great, so where is it that we are heading?” Akela asked. Koda then went into a long explanation as to where it was and how to get there, it was quite boring really, but I was glad he made Akela hear it too, because I didn’t really get a lot of where it really was.
“So, did you get any of what he said?” I asked Akela that night after we found a den for the night.
“Don’t worry baby, I got it all” She said reassuringly, “I saw how bored you were so I was sure to listen.”
“Thanks” I said gratefully.
We decided it was getting late and we should go to sleep for the night. I noticed that it was getting slightly warmer, but it was still cold. So we huddled up close, glad that we had each other.
The next morning, when I opened my eyes, something seemed different. For some reason the den seemed to be a lot brighter. So I got up, careful not to awaken the beautifully sleeping Akela next to me, and went outside of the den. As I exited the den, I noticed the land was covered in a white blanket of snow. I love snow, I remember from my omega days I would play in the snow every time it was out. But since I became a lone wolf I never had time to play anymore. So I sized the chance to have some fun. I ran out in the snow and rolled all around. I then decided that I should wait for Akela to wake up before I ruined all the good packed down snow that surrounded me. So I walked quietly back to the den and sat in the entrance, just watching Akela sleep. She is so beautiful when she sleeps; then again, she is beautiful any time.
As I was sitting there watching her, I saw her stir a little, then she slowly opened her incredible blue eyes just to see my deep amber eyes looking back at her.
“Mornin’ beautiful” I said sweetly.
I then saw her eyes focus on the top of my nose and she immediately began cracking up laughing.
“What is it?” I asked questioningly.
She slowly got to her feet still giggling a little and pointed to the tip of my nose. I wiped my paw across where she pointed and a small pile of snow hit the ground with a wet splat “Awww, you looked so much cuter with that there” she said, so I stepped outside the den, ran my nose into the snow, and then had a large amount on the top of my nose.
“Better?” I asked
“Better” she said
Then, out of no were, she tackled me into the snow. We rolled for a few turns but she ended up on top.
“You got a little snow on your nose too” I said, noticing a small amount of snow, though it was somewhat difficult to see die to her already pure white fur.
She just giggled and then jumped off of me and ran in the opposite direction. We spent the rest of the day playing like little puppies in the fresh snow. We were having the time of our lives.
Chapter 10
SNOW! Part 2
“Hi sweetie” Zaltana said to me as I came back from hunting. I had collected three rabbits and so I dropped two of them at my Zaltana’s feet.
“Thanks Koda, but why don’t we split the third one” she said to me.
“Ok, that works” I said to her. So we both dug in. she finished before me and I felt her gaze upon me as I finished my meal. We decided to walk to a nearby river to clean the blood off of our fur. It had been dark for about an hour now and I noticed it was beginning to get a little bit warmer. We were walking and I was thinking about earlier when Micah convinced me that it would be a good idea to split up, I honestly wasn’t really sure if he was really doing it for everyone, or if he was being selfish. As I was thinking, I looked up and suddenly a large snowflake fell and hit me right in the eye.
“Snow?” Zaltana said questioningly as the large snowflakes fell all around us, collecting on the ground very quickly.
“What, never seen snow before?” I asked her.
“Well ya” she said, “But not since I was only a pup when I was taken away from my pack.”
“Well then” I said, “We will have to have some fun once it collects better”
So with that we decided to continue to the river and play once the snow collected better.
As we were cleaning off our fur I noticed myself staring at her while she was cleaning off her fur, so I looked away, only to find my gaze floating back to her strong muscular body. As the snow collected upon her pitch black fur it stood out very well due to its white color.
“You are so beautiful” I said to her stupidly
She just giggled and responded sweetly with “Thanks”
I began exiting the river, just as I was getting to the bank of it Zaltana tackled me playfully. She pinned me down to the shallow slope of the bank of the river bank. So I wriggle out and reversed it and ended up on top. I then got off of her and ran out of the river onto the softly padded snowy ground.
“I’m gonna get ya” she said playfully.
“Not if I get you first” I responded as I jumped toward her. She rolled off to the side and I ended up with a mouth full of snow.
“Hahaha” Zaltana laughed at me, “Now this is fun” she said jokingly, and just as she did I caught her off guard and tackled her off her feet. We rolled around in the snow for a while and played before we decided we should get some sleep.
“That…was…fun” Zaltana said between gasps as we were walking back to our den we were staying for the night.
“Yes…it was” I responded. I noticed it was starting to get light already so we decided we would sleep for only a few hours before we decided to head out the next day. We wanted to get there as soon as possible because we figured Micah and Akela are probably going to be traveling all the next day.
“Good night” I said to Zaltana once we got back to our den.
“Good night” she said back to me.
As I was drifting off to sleep I wondered if Akela and Micah were going to be having any fun in the snow. Probably not, they probably are going to have traveled all day and will be way ahead of us. But who knows, maybe they will waste the whole day playing.
Chapter 11
Preparing For War.
“Finally here” I said as we entered the valley of the dying wolf pack, we had been traveling for about 5 days since we split up with Zaltana and Koda.
“’bout time you two got here” Koda said emerging from behind a very large tree.
“Sorry,” I said, remembering the whole day we wasted, and then spent a lot of our travel time messing around. “We…had a few delays” I said.
He just glared at me.
“What?” I asked questioningly.
“Nothing” he said, turning away, I wonder what his problem is?
After that awkward little encounter, Koda proceeded to lead us to the leader of the pack we were to help.
“Hello, and welcome to our land” A large wolf said approaching us.
“Hi” Akela and I both said at the same time.
“I’m Pyrus, the leader of the pack that lives in this land” Pyrus said
“I’m Micah, and this is Akela” I said, gesturing to Akela standing next to me.
“It is a pleasure to meet you two” he said nicely. “Now I must ask” he said “Are you two looking to join our pack? Because we are having very difficult times right now, the food is scarce and we are getting too little food for how many wolves we have.”
“Oh no sir” I said reassuringly, “So how many wolves do you have?” I asked, in idea hatching in my head.
“We have exactly 25 wolves in our pack currently.” He said, “Why do you ask?” he asked curiously.
“Well I have an idea as to how you and your pack will get a hold of some land with much more food” I said, “But there’s a catch”
“Which is what?” he asked
“It is very risky and will likely end in many deaths, and you may not even win to be honest.”
“Hmm.” He said considering my proposal. “What are the specifics of this idea of yours?” he asked, I was surprised that he was even considering this.
“Well” I said, “There is a very large pack of wolves living in Jasper National Park, and I was thinking…”
“You expect my weak and outnumbered pack to go up against one of the strongest packs out there?” he asked rhetorically, also interrupting me in the process.
“Well I know it’s…” I started to say before getting cut off again.
“We’ll do it” Pyrus said seeming very sure of himself.
I understood where he was coming from; he was the leader of a pack that was slowly dying off, and he was desperate to save them. This current situation kind of reminds me of a saying I once heard, it is better to burn out then to fade away. In other words, it is better to die fighting than to die doing nothing.
“Now I know I am not a part of your pack, but I will be in the fight with you” I said. Akela looked at me questioningly and I saw Pyrus shaking his head.
“No, I can’t let you do that, this is our fight” he said, “Plus we already have some beef with them anyway”
“I am the one who brought up this idea anyway.” I said, there was no way I was going to start a fight and not be in it.
“Well if Micah is going to be in it, then I will be fighting too” Akela said seeming very sure of herself.
“No” I said firmly “I will not allow you to be in this fight, too risky, I won’t be able to live with myself if something happened to you.
“We will discuss this later” she responded. Dang I thought to myself she has her mind set on fighting too; there is no way to convince her otherwise once she has her mind set on something.
“I will be joining you also” Zaltana said from behind me.
“Me too” Koda said
“Ok then” Pyrus said “We will leave tomorrow for jasper, we can’t afford to stay here any longer; we have already had four deaths due to hunger.”
I just sighed.
“We have a den for you four to stay in for the night, but it is my apologies that we have no food for you, we haven’t even any for ourselves”
“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked Akela the next morning as we began heading toward Jasper.
“Yes” she said as if we were done with the conversation already.
“I just don’t anything to happen to you” I said worriedly.
“You know I can handle myself in a fight” she said stubbornly
“Yeah, against one or two wolves” I said “but what happens if you have three or even four wolves against you, we are most likely outnumbered so it is extremely possible that that may happen.”
“I said I can handle myself” she said, and with that, I knew we were done with the conversation.
After the long three day travel to Jasper, we started to enter the valley and heard a loud battle cry from a wolf deep in the forest area we were walking into. And suddenly we heard what sounded like thunder coming at us. We were now at war…
Chapter 12
The War
I was standing in a forest area, as I stood there; I noticed that my fur was badly splashed with the deep red blood of many a wolf. I began scanning my surroundings, my left eye still throbbing and sightless, and noticed dead wolves all around me, I saw Koda sulking over his mate’s beaten and bloody body lying lifelessly on the ground, she had five dead wolves surrounding her body, and she fought hard, but was overwhelmed in the end. Koda had gotten his revenge; I knew this because just to his left laid a very mutilated wolf on the ground, he had savagely torn out the throat of the wolf that had killed his mate. As I continued to scan the area, I saw Akela standing with her side covered in dark blood, it stood out on her white fur, and she also had bed cuts on her sides and face, though she seemed generally okay. She was looking at the dead black wolf that Koda was sitting next to; we all knew that without Zaltana, we would not have been victorious. Seeing this scene of the aftermath of this incredible battle between good and evil changed me, I knew I would never be the same, matter of fact; no one that experienced it would ever be the same. As I looked further to my left, I saw the dead body of the leader of the enemy pack, Dakari. He was lying on the ground, and surrounding his dead body was soil that was drenched in his red blood, I had taken him down myself, and he had taken my left eye with him. I guess that was revenge for his treacherous right-hand-wolf. Though we had won in the end, it was at great loss for all…
(About 20 minutes earlier)
As I heard the thunder of the enemy wolves coming at us, I prepared myself for what was coming. I stood in the small clearing we were in, waiting for the enemy wolves to come at us, and all in an instant, numbering in the low 30s, a large group of wolves emerged from the tree line. I was suddenly hit with what seemed like a ton of bricks and knocked off my feet. The wolf that had tackled me ended up dead within 30 seconds. I immediately jumped to my feet and scanned the surrounding area looking for another opponent. I saw that Zaltana had already taken down three wolves and was about to eradicate a fourth. I then found another wolf to fight and tackled him to the ground; we rolled around for a couple minutes slashing at each other before I decided I was done fighting this one and instantly stamped out his life force with a single slash to the weak tissue of his throat.
After I finished with that wolf I saw that most of the fighting was done, but not all, there were still little battles raging all around me. I saw that Akela had killed at least four wolves herself, but before I could examine the area further I was confronted by the leader of the hunting party we encountered what seemed like ages ago.
“Bruce, take care of this one yourself!” his leader Dakari ordered from afar.
“With pleasure boss!” he yelled back. “Remember me?” he asked rhetorically.
“Indeed I do” I returned. And with that, I tackled him off his feet and began slashing at him savagely. He rolled out from under me and came up and slashed me on my left shoulder with his teeth, I could immediately tell it was a bad cut due to the enormous amount of blood that was running down my front left leg. I ignored the pain because I didn’t have the time to deal with it. I immediately slashed out with my teeth and tore at his face, destroying his left eye and also leaving him with a bad cut across his cheek. I did this so savagely that he was knocked off his feet. He immediately scrambled back to a standing position, I was prepaired to continue to fight him, but he ran away like the coward I knew he was.
“I hope you never forget this!” I yelled after him.
“Trust me, I won’t, and I’ll make sure you don’t either!” he yelled back, all the while running away as fast as he could.
“Get back here you traitor!” Dakari yelled to him, but this didn’t seem to have any effect because Bruce continued to run away.
“Gah, I’ll take care of you myself!” Dakari yelled to me.
Before he could make the first move I jumped upon him and began to attack him, he was caught off guard, but I could tell he had been in many a fight and knew what to do. He wriggled out from under me and slashed at my face. I felt his sharp teeth sink into my flesh and tear at my left eye. This, unlike it did with Bruce, filled me with rage rather than fear. I jumped upon him and tore at the flesh of his face; he tried to wriggle away again but was unsuccessful. I was prepared for him this time. I was tired of dealing with him and his pack, and the thought of what he had done just brought more rage to me, I tore at the flesh of his soft throat, ripping a gaping hole in the artery in his throat that held his life inside him. I felt the warm blood seep into my mouth and let go of his throat that was still gushing blood onto the grass and soil surrounding him.
I stood in this bloody battlefield, examining my surroundings. I saw Koda sulking over his mate’s lifeless body. And I instantly knew none of us would ever be the same…
Chapter 13
(About one and a half years later)
“Hi sweetie” I said as I heard Akela approach me from my left side. She was one of the only wolves I let approach me from that side since I was blind in that eye.
“Hi baby” she said, I knew it was her because I had known her and the way she sounded when she walked.
“Mommy! Daddy!” Yelled our three pups simultaneously as they ran into our den. They were about three months old by now. We had two girls and one boy. The girls, who were very much identical in appearance both to each other, and their mother Akela. One of the girls was named Keara, and the other was Keoka. Now the boy, Na’vi, took mostly after me, both in appearances and personality. Though he was the same age as his sisters, he was already much larger than them. His coloring was a beautiful mix between my generally dark fur and Akela’s incredibly light fur. The amazing design of his smooth fur is completely indescribable
“Hi Sweeties” Akela said to our pups. She then turned to me and said “I’m going to take them out and show them how to hunt. Wanna come?” she asked.
“Yeah” I said excitedly “That would be great!”
As we were slowly making our way to our hunting grounds, I was thinking about the past year and a half or so since the large battle. After the

After the

As we were slowly making our way to our hunting grounds, I was thinking about the past year and a half or so since the large battle. After the battle most of the enemy, and friendly, wolves had been killed, the friendly pack leader included. As we continued to make our way around I saw Koda. Poor Koda I thought to myself, he had been through so much what with the loss of his mate. He hasn’t been the same since the death of Zaltana.
We continued walking and I thought about the pack Akela and I brought together. It was made up of the remaining wolves from the pack we were trying to help, but ultimately got them destroyed. We also took in some lone wolves that were in the area. So with our pack of 22 wolves, we decided to take over the land of the pack who we slaughtered.
“Look, there’s one now” Akela said suddenly, interrupting my thoughts “Everybody get down” we all dropped to our bellies.
“Alright” Akela said to our pups “Your father and I will show you how to do it, and once you all get old enough, we will let you try for yourselves.”
“Ok!” they all yelled excitedly.
“Shh, quiet” she said, then nodded to me, signifying that we were ready to go.
“Stay here and keep quiet” I said to the pups. From where we were, I snuck around from the right side and my mate took the left. We had hunted together so much that we knew how each other hunted, so we needed no way to signal each other. Suddenly, we both emerged from the tree cover and converged upon the caribou. It had no chance, we were perfectly in sync. As Akela drove it closer to me and I lunged in, aiming straight for the throat. I grabbed onto its throat and held on to it as it kicked and bucked. When I decided I had done enough damage, I started to loosen my grip on its throat. Just as I started to let go, it decided to swing around, launching me through the air and knocking me into Akela. We rolled for a few seconds and came to a stop facing each other. We were both laughing and looking into each other’s eyes.
“Your eyes are so incredible” I said lovingly.
“So is your…eye” she said, holding back a giggle, then we both started cracking up laughing. We were still as in love as we had always been. After laughing for about five minutes, our laughing finally died down.
As we stood back up, we saw all three of our pups staring at us with blank faces,
“What?” we both said at the same time, our voices making a perfect harmony as they usually did when we talked at the same time. Then it was our pups turn to crack up laughing.
“What!” we said simultaneously, yet again making a beautiful harmony.
This only made them laugh harder. We stared at them for a few minutes with confused faces, and then one of our pups, Keoka, said in her sweet puppy voice “You two make such a cute couple.” Then she continued to laugh. Once everyone had regained their composure I said “Why don’t we eat then head back to the den”
“Well I think I will stay a while longer once we finish” Akela said to me.
“Ok” I responded.
After we had finished eating I gathered up the pups and turned to Akela.
“I love you so much” I said to her
“I love you too” she responded with a sweet smile. I’m not sure why, but this little exchange seemed very significant for some reason, I’m not sure why.
We began walking back to the den and I thought to myself why would she want to stay out? Well maybe she was just enjoying nature, who knows I’m not sure why her wanting to stay out was so significant, I mean, she does it all the time, so why in the world would I give it so much thought.
Just then I got this bad feeling in my gut, like something bad was about to happen. And suddenly I heard Akela scream out from afar.
“Get back to the den, and stay there!” I yelled to the pups as I began running toward the sound of the scream. After what seemed like forever I finally made it back to the clearing where we took down that caribou. The first thing I saw was Akela’s bright white fur in the middle of the clearing. The second thing I noticed was how badly splashed her pure white fur was with dark red blood. I was instantly filled with rage. As I ran toward her I knew she was dead, and this filled me with yet more rage. I continued to scan the area there, no more than 10 yards away, was Bruce, with his scarred up left eye and his whole face covered in scars. I was so filled with rage at that moment, for his killing of my mate, that I tackled him with no words exchanged between us. I was on top of him and was just tearing up his face and arms he was using to try to protect that horrible face of his, the face that belonged to the wolf that killed my beloved Akela.
After tearing him up for a few minutes I got off of him, I wasn’t done with him. Not yet anyway. As he tried to stagger to his feet I noticed that his face was very bloody and mangled. He was trying to get to his feet, but I wasn’t going to allow it. I grabbed him with my teeth by the fur on his neck and dragged him over to a nearby hill that was very steep, and threw him off. I watched him roll down the hill, hitting almost every rock and stone possible on his way down. He eventually ended up in a creek at the bottom of the hill. I slowly made my way to where he was and pulled him out of the creek. As his head emerged he took a large gasp of air. As I placed him on the land next to the creek and noticed that he had a good deal of broken bones. I then put my paws upon his wind pipe and slowly put pressure down on it until I had a sizable amount of force on it. I held it there for a little while longer and watched him struggle. Then I released the pressure and he took in fast ragged breaths.
“P-please…d-d-don’t kill m-me” he begged.
I knew from his injuries that he wouldn’t survive without anyone there to help him get food.
So I said “ok, I won’t kill you, good luck out here alone.” I said with an evil grin. I then slowly made my way to the top of the little that I had thrown him down, completely ignoring his pleas for help.
I returned to my mate’s lifeless body. Isn’t it ironic, that it’s a beautiful night out? The full moon shone brightly overhead. The sky was filled with millions of stars and the whole night was lit up like day do to the tons of stars and the full moon. I laid down next to my mates body and rested my head on her side, looking up at the stars and the moon, though the stars were clear, to me they were blurry, everything was blurry that night. I felt that I would never see anything clearly again, because I felt as though I would never stop crying…
Chapter 13
The Final Chapter
