                    Hopefully, this will be constructive:
I recommend choosing a light source and go with it. I know underwater is very reflective, but shadows will still cast (do not be afraid to push the shadows darker than you'd want!). Please refer to references such as http://www.fanimages.com/Animals/Do.....r%20Shadow.JPG (if the link works; otherwise, Google! :P ). From top to bottom, it goes from lighting to shadow, then the very underbelly is the color from the water, or ground, reflection from underneath.
I also recommend using the color "black" if you can help it.
Another would be composition; you could shave off some of the borders, especially, on the left side and a little from the bottom.
Obviously, some of this can be discarded under certain scenarios such as styles and such, but it seems you are attempting to shoot for a more painterly style, so I put in my 2 cents.
