Xiaolian the red panda, looking smug and ready for a fight, with her unique weapons... You know someone is overly confident when they go into battle wearing so little.
Her name means "little lotus". She is small, but formidable.
Xiaolian is copyright 2007 Kacey Miyagami. I thought it was about time I created a new character.
Inks, acrylic paints and colored pencils on 9"x12" bristol board.

Excellent work, as always. I like everything about her. I would love to see more pictures of her.
And now I have to go and ruin it.
Art and wuxia are free to ignore physics, but I wouldn't be the roaring bull-geek that I am if I didn't do the math: the head of the flail looks about 1/7 her height - if she's 5'3, that makes it about 9" - which if 1" thick of brass would weigh about 60 lb, or almost half her body weight. If you make it ¼” thick, it will still be more than solid enough to settle anyone’s hash, but will weigh about 20 lb, which is what a heavy flail weighs in D&D (although theirs aren’t nearly as cute).
Now that I’ve got that geekery out, I can go back to enjoying the pretty picture. :)

LOL - Alright, alright - you win...
I don't do metalworking, so it was just a guess ^.^... I do find it amazing though, and also encouraging - that my viewers are so perceptive that I need to really consider the physics of the elements of my work, to make them believable - because if I notice something a bit off, that means at least 20 other people will notice it too ^.^, It pushes me to be a perfectionist.

I didn't want to detract from your wonderful work. It's more a failing on my part - to insist on throwing in RL physics where they don't belong and don't add anything. It was more "Hey! Look at me! I know the density of brass and how to calculate the volume of a spherical shell!" That it weighed 60 lbs surprized me too - large metal spheres are outside of our usual experience, and are much heavier than you would expect.
In any case, it doesn't affect the picture - you can't see how thick the flail-head is. I just wanted you to know what it would be like if it were real, and that you can make it lighter and still have a very sturdy and formidable weapon.

I think this is a good example of how you need not look like a tank to hit like one.
With many 'heavy arm' weapons, the secret really is in keeping the weapon moving, and just redirecting it into your opponent at the necessary times. The power does not come from strength of arm so much as accuracy of swing. Her pufferfish flail is a great example of that, and being lightly dressed to be flexible fits in well.
And having a backup weapon for close range is pretty astute too.
That, and she's cute, too! *smirk*

Yay for red pandas! :) and shortness! Very beautifully done, I love the yellow lighting and the blowfish flail. XD
though I must point out Red Pandas are not digitigrade and have 5 toes. >.< they walk on flat feet. Sort of more like a bear or weasel.
No offense or anything though because I absolutely love your artwork! Just thought it might be some information you'd want to know. I've been studying them a lot lately because I have a character of one.
I also figured out in the process that they don't have pawpads.. just fluff in the shapes of pawpads in a lighter color on their hands. That one REALLY confused me. They are such beautiful, cute, and strange animals. XD

I know I agree! I wish I had one as a pet too. haha!

Very nice. I love how simple the background is, but at the same time, how much it adds to the overall quality of the picture.
I love the face on her flail XD;
And the details on the fan? Geez.
Her outfit, yeah, I'd have to say she'd be pretty confident in her sk1llz to go with such little protection. But regardless, great job!

What a cute weapon for such a cute lady! Love the art and the golden blow fish for the head of the flail.
Hope you don't mind I mention a few things here, since I am a Chinese (Canadian) and I am fairly well versed on the way Chinese fought through ages. Unless I am mistaken, Chinese (and even Koreans & Japaneses) never use flails. However, there are serveral weapons have some similarity. The weapon you are looking for here should be "Meteor Hammer" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_hammer The weapon used by Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill 1. Such weapons serves as a long range strking weapon and snaring/enstrangle weapon. However, head this big is useless for a meteor hammer's head. Spikes is counter-productive because a lot of moves are executed by holidng the "head" with a hand.
On the other hand, there are warriors throught CHinese history using large maces (shaped like pumpkins/melons) or morningstar. But I do not recall seeing warhammers (two handed jackhammer yes) in Oriental world.
As for weapons larger than the user, it doesn't bother me that much since stuff like that been done all over the place, even with more refined style (espeically prevlaent from mangas) Just think about the gnomes from WoW. Yes, I am looking at you fellow Warriors. Little buggers who duel wields weapons easily over half of their weight or more.
If you need to think about Oriental weapons for your chararcters, I'd be honoured to offer some helpful advices or insights.
Cheers

Thank you for the information!... Yeah - that kind of stuff is stuff that I was really unaware of. The Chinese weapons in films I've seen seem to have so many variations and unique looking weapons, that I think I got the impression that the variations were endless. I should do more research ^.^! But yeah, I got this idea, because I like pufferfish... But its important for me as an artist to also learn as much about my interests as I can, so that the story behind the art also makes sense =)
Thank you for your insight!

Its never easy to do something with "foreign" contents. I <3 you works and that's why I thought you are one of people I definitely need to get a hold of to draw my characters for me.
I'd be honoured if I can help you with aything Oriental based. THat's my forte and I wish that is one fo the things I'll be known of, other than my wierd humor of Sumo Car Wash.
