I used to be able to do the old-school Mum-ra laugh. Been watching the new show, rather disappointed in the voice actor not having that "horrible old man" quality to his voice so I tried it again, and I think I was bleeding from the throat for a while, so maybe I understand now :|
Was watching the behind the series retrospective feature they included on one of the sets and the cast was saying that Mumm-Ra's voice actor (who also did Panthro) really got into the part, gurgle and all when he did it. It does seem like it would be really difficult to pull off.
I like the new show well enough. It's almost a little TOO well produced/streamlined, visually speaking. That, added to having that "let's ape Bruce Timm" look that most of Warner Bros. action shows have now causes it to lack a lot of the creepy, bizarre, moodiness that the original had. That and I really don't like their take on Panthro.

Oh I actually really like Panthro.... In the same way that I like the American Godzilla movie. It's a cool thing in-and-of itself, just as long as you don't compare it to the original :D
Honestly though the hardest I laughed in the new series was when they were doing the "Lion-O lives someone else's flashback and learns about how the ancient Thunderians actually worked with Mumm-Ra" episode, and the enemy up on the screen was Mon*Star from the Silverhawks XD

Had a good laugh at the Mon-Star moment myself. So much so that I was later given the first dvd set as a gift a few weeks later, which is what kicked off my current run of old cartoon watching. :-D
I think my hang-up on Panthro is due largely to the original having been my favorite as a kid. Other than that, I rather enjoy the new series overall. The new takes on Tygra, and Grune in particular are pretty well done.
