It's how to properly do pop-culture references. You don't strain them, you make them subtle. Only the people who get it recognize it as a pop-culture reference, it doesn't break the flow, and most of all it doesn't tarnish the atmosphere. Like in Dead Space when you heard "Paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard" in the medical bay. Perfect placement, subtracts nothing, and 3 Stooges fans loved it.
