ignorance might have been bliss
this is the problem with being a chronic worrier (also jewish)
you hear something on the news and it just eats away at you with concern.
WHATS SO UNHEALTHY ABOUT SITTING
AM I GOING TO GET LEG CANCER???
DOES CROUCHING IN AWKWARD POSITIONS APPLY???
I WALK FOUR MILES A FEW TIMES A WEEK YOU TELL ME THAT DOESNT MEAN ANYTHING??
AAAAAAA
seriously though i can't stop worrying about this

I've heard a lot about this. Funny crouches should actually be better than sitting, yes. :D Also it's only really bad if you sit for the whole time and never move, just getting up to pee or whatever helps. Alternately you can do what my husband is planning, and get a desk that's tall enough to work at while standing. (Or put one up on blocks.) Even better is if you can build a desk top onto a treadmill and walk slowly while working, but I dunno if you can do that while drawing. I know it's possible to type while walking though!
hahaaha i imagine the lineart would get REALLY SHAKEY if i was trying to draw and run
that's a bit comforting cause i'm pretty fidgety. i move around a lot and get up a lot, except when i'm painting. but i usually do the painting sitting on the floor, i dunno if that's different in some way :B

EXACTLY what Bladespark said. Sitting for long periods on end can be bad for your back. It's why lower school classes are only about 40-some odd minutes. Heck, even if you just stand up every hour or two, walk down to the kitchen or even just stretch a little is enough to compensate.
Rigamortis?
Isn't that what starts to set in after you die and makes you body all stiff?
I could understand strain on the disks and muscle atrophy there. Never thought of that though.
I would have thought they would have done a better job of reporting on this topic though. It's as though their treating people as children. It reminds me of the time mom told me my face would get stuck if I kept making faces.

XD I sit for almost the whole day at my desk, either drawing or surfing the internet.
I do get up from time to time, and I often stretch. Maybe my immense sitting hours is why my leg muscles have been a bit sore... oh well. I'm too lazy to do walking, and besides I get my 4 hours workout when I'm at work at least twice a week or more.
I'm unhlealthy, and I'll probably pay for it when I'm older, but for now I'm just doing what I do~
Also news stations love to be fear mongers, so I've learned to just ignore most of what they say.

Ja, it's easy to fall for the Worry of the Week
Something pretty banal as sitting and working for a long time..geez. But just yesterday, it was on Time and the BBC that studies have found no evidence that pot smoking harms your lungs. Rejoice, livey up yourselfs, mon!
Myself, I sit 'cause I have to study. I walk 45 min/day, and I'm in the grateful 33% of Amerikan adults in the healthy Body/Mass/Index range. So if I get necrotic butt-flesh from sitting it's gods fault.

i did see that study, and it was v interesting :o it also kind of shoots one other study in the foot. a while back some medical team was working on growing THC-free marijuana to use for cancer patients. so they'd get the benefits without the high, i guess. but if the THC itself is the anti-inflamatory (and that's why they think it didn't damage lungs much at all) then well that makes such a strain rather useless to cultivate.
i kind of wish they'd do one on the effects of THC on developing embryos and stuff. i feel like for something that's been around as long as it has, and has basicly weeded its way (hoho) into society with as little consequence as it has, we know so little about the actual lasting effects on humans. it's been around long enough that generally the consensus of people who smoke it is that there really are none. but being a huge nerd, I REQUIRE SCIENCE TO TELL ME THAT
SCIENCE
WHERE ARE YOU SCIENCE
and yeah our culture is very uhm. geared to sitting, i suppose.

I recall the Propaganda they showed in public school which either implied or blatently stated that marijuana and elessdee would cause permanant damage physically and mentally.
The "Brain Doctor", Dr. Steve Amen asserts that lifestyle changes can reverse brain impairments, such as in individuals who work around volitile substances, or recovering alcohol and drug users.
Science is finding more evidence about the physical regeneration possibilities of the human body even into old age.
It would be cool if they find a way a person could regrow a missing limb.

that's a secret only the nematodes and lizards know right now.
i have a plethora of propaganda that state explicitly that pot is worse for your lungs than tabacco. i always thought that bogus, because i know how smokers cough when they wake up in the morning. and i know how pot smokers DON'T.

Sitting down for too long can cause some serious problems with your legs and/or arteries, the minor one being temporarily cutting off blood flow. The solution to the problem isn’t “Stop sitting” it’s to frequently change the position in which you sit. Sitting on your feet that like that? Start the moment your butt hurts, then stop the moment your feet fall asleep. If you can manage other positions (like with footrests, upside down, laying on your stomach, ect …) then try to switch between those as well. Unless in your in a public place like a work office or school. Then your just supposed to stay perfectly still, and die.
but i can't tell when my extremities are alseep unless i try to stand up and start staggering around :o
also i'm used to limbs falling asleep cause i'm small, scrawny, and dislike eating much. also it's cold and that's bad for bloodflow too. i used to wake up with totally numb arms if i wore anything around my wrists when i slept.

I'm the same way, that’s why someone got scared and told me it's a bad thing ... funniest moment was waking up in the morning, lifting my arm up to turn the light out, then suddenly loosing control and having the thing flop onto my face. Can't really help for your sleeping habits, but while awake you can always just make a habit of getting up regularly. I go for coffee every twenty minutes or so, meaning I don't forget easily. The downside is that drinking so much coffee is bad for my liver ...
Bwahahaha! I've got scoliosis and a heart condition, if I live long enough to die of liver failure I'll count myself lucky.

my source is a gameshow :B a news-related NPR gameshow, but yes. they don't tell you many details, it was more a quiz question. i believe the Q was
"i've done it at home, i've done it in a car, i've done it on a plane, and i've even done it on a horse. now you're telling me it's BAD for me? what am i talking about?"
and the answer was sitting, followed by a brief (maybe 10 seconds) explaination that XYZ study has found that too much sitting is unhealthy even if you excersise every day.
