let's be honest - even many mascots or company-animals are drawn the way that they imply sexiness and get the kids the imagination of wanting this in their bed.
Also fairy tales, ya know the basis how furry fandom developed, they contain so many fetishes .... so yea, this is just very harmless compared to these other things :P

you took the story out of context because you are not the target audience for it.
Inflate is not a kindergarten word. Maybe if they said Cat, Balloon, and Grow instead of just fat and cat; there would be a better understanding of what is going on in the illustration.
They half-assed it. like anything they do now. We need to compare children books from different years to see if there is a decrease in effective learning material.
I don't really know what else to say here.

also if you want to see something that actually did get kids into the furry fandom with out them actually slipping anything into the learning material. Look for "The Alphabet Pals"; An entirely Anthropomorphic cast.

Yes, yes YES! It's all falling into place! Once we brainwash the next generation into furries, our armies shall blot out the face of the Earth! Our victory shall be supreme! They laughed at me, but no more! I'll show THEM who's the crazy one! Ahaha...Ahahahah*gets hit by frying pan*
