Especially because ravens are, well, really bloody smart. They're at least as smart as monkeys. Heck, they can even be taught to talk.

Yeah, but a griffon at least has lion parts. Heck, it also has EAGLE parts, so an eagle would be more appropriate for them. And I think Rowena was a woman.
And the badger for Hufflepuff makes quite a bit of sense, if you remember that the cute and cuddly badger is a very capable fighter who can handle animals several times larger than them. Underestimate a Hufflepuff at your own peril.

It does make sense, what I mean is that the names themselves don't have much to do with the animal. Hufflepuff doesn't really equal badger. So that's why I don't find it all that weird that Ravenclaw isn't a Raven, I just think of it as her name (totally forgot it was a girl!). It'd be better if it was a raven of course.
True. And these were originally children's books (I consider the final few books to still be children's books, but the changing tone and themes make the first three or so books much more "childish").
Though I think that the four of them had some connection to their chosen animal, either as familiars, as animagi, or as Patronuses, or some combination of the three (a person's animagus form and their patronus seem to be the same animal).
