Foozle Bop - Summer Splash
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS FROM?
There's a story behind this one, so hold on tight while I try to explain it.
There were several catalyzing factors involved:
1) Several years ago, I did a bouncy little synth piece I called "Foozle Bop." The basic idea was, it was the "end theme music" for a fictional foozles cartoon. Very Hannah-Barbera. I sent copies of it to a few people, put it on one of my CDs, and then forgot all about it.
2) While looking thru the sketchbook of
vkyrie at Anthrocon, I discovered that she'd done this neat drawing of an all-foozle band called Foozle Bop, seemingly based on my song. Now I'd toyed with the idea of an all-foozle band myself once, but I'd never gone anywhere with it, let alone put pencil to paper. But, it was a neat piece of work and it stuck in my head, even after I thought I had forgotten all about it.

...which got me thinking about 80's cartoon characters, new wave music, and sex all in one go.
4) My recent acquisition of IK Multimedia's Amplitube2 VST plugin. It's a computer modeled set of guitar amps and effects that you can patch into your mixing program, and use in place of the real thing. Sounds almost like the real thing, too. I'd been tweaking the settings around, and managed to put together a really nice, cheesy 80's guitar sound.
And I fiddled with it some more. And I pulled out a set of drum samples, and put a bassline behind it, and without realizing it, It had turned into a song. And with thoughts 1,2 &3 already floating through my head, it wasn't long before it evolved into this.
So here it is, my take on what an all-foozle 80's band would sound like, and I went as heavy on the 80's sound as I could, without getting too silly.
The band has four members. Haven't got names yet, and until I can get a scan of the picture Val did, I'm not even entirely sure what they look like (hence the silhouettes in the cover art) but here's what they play on this track:
1) Rhythm guitar: Steinberger GL2T
2) Lead Guitar: Steinberger GL2T : Tamborine: Hand Claps
3) Synth Bass: Yamaha SHS-10 Keytar: Hand Claps
4) Drums: Simmons SDS-5 Electronic Drumkit: Hand Claps
...though for the purposes of this song, the steinbergers are portrayed by a Fender Stratocaster, and they yamaha keytar is portrayed by an emulated Yamaha FM-7. The simmons drums are based on a set of direct-line samples I downloaded from the "goodies" page of:
http://www.wolfgangstoelzle.de/
(for you non-gearheads, The simmons SDS-5 is that electronic drumkit with the octagonal drums, that Buckaroo Banzai, the Thompson Twins, and damn near everybody else in 1984 used. )
Anyway, enough prattle. On with the show.
Let's rock!

Heh, I know how that goes. I spent several fruitless days trying to track down a proper set of samples from the old Yamaha SHS-10 keytar, with no luck. I eventually had to fake it, as my only other alternative was to try and buy one on ebay. And trying to get anything off ebay these days, is just asking to get ripped off.
Getting the right synth sound can be a real pain.

The synths sound just a bit modern, but I've recently taken another try at doing 80s-style synthpop and it turned out halfway decent:

Well, "Foozle Bop" isn't the name of a cartoon.
Foozle, as a word, is used sometimes in writing circles as a generic name for a plot device. The MacGuffin is the prize. The Foozle is the beast guarding it.
I thought it was a cute name, so I used it as an alien race.
