Sun and Moon circled, Day after Night, Night after Day,
As summer grew, Eagle spread his wings, but Falcon,
She eyed him, jealously, and shrank away.
"Oh, he takes night from me!" she cried, "fewer eyes
To gaze upon me and my stars!" So envious Moon
Could take no more, and chased Sun away!
Night followed Night, and Night followed once more
Where Day should be, but Sun could not be seen.
Proud, Falcon spread her wings but found them dark!
"My light!" She looked up, angry. "Stars! How do you shine
When I have no light?" The Stars laughed,
"Foolish Moon!" They called, "you do not see?
"Sun gives his light not only to Day, but to you, too!"
Falcon was vain no more, but cried out for Eagle,
Searching across the world, but he could not be found.
"Bright sun!" At last she called, "come back! The Sky,
It grows cold and dull without your wings. The Night
Shines with naught but laughing stars."
A brilliant light cloaked Moon, and she closed her eyes
And she knew it was Sun.
"I have spread my wings too wide," Eagle called,
"We will share the Sky; in Summer I will fly long, and in
Winter, you shall take my perch." And Falcon felt joy.
Twice a year, when Day and Night are equal,
Eagle and Falcon fly together, each shining bright in the sky.

At first glance it seems almost like an abstract whirlpool of colour, but then the eye picks out the geometric patterns and the avian figures start becoming ever more apparent and defined. You feel drawn inside the reality of the image. It reminds me of the optical illusions of M.C. Escher. Very fascinating and mesmerising - an excellent piece!

Makes me think of Cliff Whiting's 'Tawihiri Matea' mural - you seen this?
(It has more brilliant colours in person...)
The colour use is wonderful! Watercolours can be so expressive in the right hands.

Actually, I'd doodled this design in my sketchbook about a year back. Then I was flipping through the sketchbook for ideas, spotted the doodle, and went, "hey, I liked that idea," and then fleshed it out. The big thing was getting the symmetry right, which I did by drawing one bird in detail, and then flipping it over in Photoshop and altering it back and forth until I was happy. Then I transferred the drawing to paper, finished the drawing, and painted.
I actually have a few blog posts showing the progress from start to finish:

Thank you so much for linking those! I'm still learning how to do the acrylic over watercolor thing and it's mostly trial and error. Seeing all of your progress shots and detailed explanations of your process is really helpful! How are you able to do acrylic washes without smearing the watercolor underneath?
The final piece is incredible and all of the planning and prep you did really paid off. The richness and symmetry is really stunning and I can say without reservation that this is one of my favorite pieces on this website. Art like this is why I keep an account here - it's really inspiring!
