My second real winner photo of FC 2012. REALLY proud of this one. This lighting was not by accident. I had quite a few failed attempts at timing the light XD I did finally get it though in this shot.
You can really see the limitations of this camera here though. If I ever endeavor to do more shots of this type, I will have to look into a good full frame camera (ala D3s or the new D4). With a higher ISO I could have used a higher shutter speed and got his finger nice and sharp in the shot.
This was a really fun thing to shoot. I'm going to try and get more DJ stage stuff at the next cons I go to. When you haul a big ass lens and flash with a huge camera body, people don't usually bother to ask if you're supposed to be there or not XD Thankfully, furcons are pretty accommodating when it comes to stage access.
I did use a flash here, but I suspect it's impact was minimal. Attempted to bounce off of the insanely high ceiling, no flash card. It MAY have slightly illuminated the top of his head/hair, but it probably didn't do much, lol.
This is the first photo I've taken where it improved by pushing the vibrance to maximum. Usually a photo can only handle a touch. Good thing to note for later.

Thanks. Portraits aren't too bad outside of a studio setting. I'm not used to telling people how to stand though so that's a bit tough for me. That's just a comfort that would be born of practice, though.
A flash opens up a lot of doors photographically speaking. Naturally, it's more useful on portrait type stuff but there's the occasional use in nighttime landscape stuff as well. If you don't mind a manual flash, you can get some really good stuff for pretty cheap.

I have a cheap slave flash I use to toy around outdoors, or in true darkness I tend to paint with a flashlight.
I use olympus and it trades size/weight for weak ISO performance :3 I'm kinda jealous of full frame SLRs in those settings, but I can't justify owning one for my activities. :P Heck, I've been thinking of getting a real flash and same thing, I'd use it once in a blue moon, just like my macro lens or other odds and ends.
