SELKIE is a novelette co-written by myself and Philip Velasquez.
In the early decades of the 21st Century, the return of magic hit the world hard, cauisng catastrophe andd chaos. But many years later the world adjusted, and sorcery and spells are just another part of modern life at the dawn of the 22nd Century.
Aileen was a hard working but quiet student, hoping to earn a degree and make a decent living as a licensed wizard. Glad you liked the story! What's on Kindle right now is a heavily-rewritten and streamlined version, much better (in my opinion) prose-wise than the version that was on SoFurry, though that version was pretty good too, IMHO. Its unfortunately no longer on SoFurry because of the ebook, but at 99 cents, it should still be accessible to just about anybody.
