jilliancorvus who offered to draw a few characters who had never been drawn before. Which was extremely kind of her to do!
Here, then, is Sabia Cuarán, who is Alana's mother, the Queen of the City of Cats, and Ciara's hereditary enemy.
Sabia is 61 years old, which makes her the second oldest of all my characters. She was also my first attempt to create a character who could serve as an antagonist without actually being a villain. Sabia is a rather bitter and cynical person, and she holds to the strongly military philosophies of her ancestors, but she's neither cruel nor particularly ambitious beyond her desire to do whatever it takes to make sure her city and her species survives. She's even fond of Ciara, in her own way, for all that Ciara doesn't exactly see that.
But don't let her age or her cane fool you! Just like Deirdre, Sabia has spent most of her life as a soldier and she has learned the value of seeming weaker than she really is right until she has her sword at someone's throat.

Yes, this is the very first picture of Sabia. I've meant to have her drawn for forever now, but never got around to it. So when Jillian offered to do a few sketches of characters who had never been drawn before, I thought I'd try my luck.
I'm really very pleased with this one, too, both for the fact that she does look her age and for the fact that, once again, Jillian managed to take a very bare description and not only put together a very wonderful picture but one which perfectly captures the mood I was looking for. There is a slyness to her, I think. Well, I don't imagine you get to stay queen for very long if you don't have at least some degree of cunning. But what interests me is the feeling of world-weariness that Jillian captured for her. Something I've always tried to get across with Sabia is that she isn't really a bad person, and she's certainly not wicked for all that she's a major antagonist. She's just been worn down and turned increasingly cynical by a whole lifetime of fighting and trouble. Just as Alana is more or less Ciara's opposite number, Sabia is Deirdre's. It's just that Deirdre has managed to hold on to a certain hope, and maybe even a certain degree of innocence, which Sabia lost long ago.
As for Sabia's relationship with Ciara, all I'll say is that I hope this new project will shed a bit more light on that, and on why Sabia treats Ciara the way she does.

Hm. It's always possible that I might have given the impression of her being overweight at some point. But I've always imagined her as being rather small and lean, and one of those people who give the impression that their whole body is one big muscle. Something like Deirdre's supposed to be, actually. But yeah, she looks pretty much like I've always imagined her to, as well. The only thing missing is that she's almost always armed with at least a dagger, but since this was free I certainly can't complain!
I do hope that this new story will live up to expectations. I hope to have it done before too awfully long as well. The rough draft has been finished for a while now, so I'm well into the editing stages.
