S...S...Stupefy! - Doodle
My Harry Potter World self is just as shy as I am, of course. I had a hard time doing anything in front of the class.

Magic in the Harry Potter world always struck me as this odd combination between "safe" and "good GODS why are we teaching this to children?!" Like, there's only one sure-fire will-kill-you-to-death spell, but all of these other spells are potentially lethal as well if you just think about these things right. (levitate target + significant altitude + gravity = broken neck). And I am aware these are teenagers, but the backwards half-medieval mindset of the wizarding world would make me think they'd be more cautious and give their children tools to defend themselves against muggles. The movies showed off combat magic much better in my opinion, with numerous fairly dangerous combat spells that actually look halfway effective.
Then again, this is coming from the perspective of someone who really likes The Dresden Files, where even Harry Dresden's weakest wind spell is acknowledged to be lethal under the right circumstances.

I think it's a good thing. If you think about it, even if they didn't teach such things, people would go out and learn it on they're own, which leaves the others defenceless. While teaching them all might make more Dark Wizards, it makes it so others can defend themselves as well.
At the same time, this is a school where it's considered acceptable for 12 year olds to get hit by flying cannon balls and potentially get knocked off of flying broomsticks to fall a hundred feet to the ground. I knew British schools were supposed to be bad, but JEEZE.
It's actually fun to imagine the lethal possibilities for spells that are supposed to be safe. Well, "fun" in a slightly disturbing sense. Apparently, Stupefy actually can kill if fired at one target too much. Sort of like a taser.

Oh, of course. I was once at a high school football game where an ambulance had to be called out.
There was one fanfic that postulated that wizards in Harry Potter are significantly more robust than normal humans, to the point that a flying cannonball is basically what's required to actually cause some form of damage.

On the other hand, they have lots of lovely extra things that will kill you.
PS: One thing I liked about the Nanoha series is that it's expressly mentioned that all attack spells have a Nonlethal and Lethal setting. So, the protagonist can unleash an attack that would make a giant robot wipe away a proud tear from its eye that can burn through an entire spaceship in one shot, and her target is still alive.
