New arrival, come in a couple of days ago.
He was picked up from a reptile show, one of many in a big plastic tub. The guy picked him out for his markings, as a present to his girlfriend who already had two rats.
Unfortunately, the owners just couldn't intro him to the others, they tried everything but it was too much fighting for them. So they gave him to me in the hopes I could get him in with some friends.
He's quite a nervous boy, very clingy when out as he is bothered by everything around him. He's also nippy, and gives you that 'fuck off now' look when you put your hand in his cage.
He needs some time and handling, but he'll be ok.
Amusing how he was saved purely for his markings, and chances are he'll go pure white in a few months. He's a roan/husky rat, and they grey on these rats tends to fade away and disappear as the rat ages, leaving you with what looks like a black-eyed white.
Even now, his markings have begun to disperse. As a young baby, he'd have had very solid black all over his back.
Roans were once a variety you needed to go to a breeder for, they just didn't turn up in rescue. Now, they're the most common variety I get in. They're everywhere.
I've even known of people get these for the pretty colours, then give them up later when they turn white as 'they don't like white rats'.
Roans also tend to show a 'blue-eyed' effect, with a grey-blue circle around the outer eye. In my experience, this is exclusive to roans.
Anyway, he was Heinz. Now he's Travolta. Loves him.

Haha! Some tend to keep colour for longer, it seems to be genetic. Breeders of roans try to breed for longer lasting colour. Some of mine still have a bit of colour left at 2 years of age, others went white before their first year!
I've seen some old rats with a LOT of colour left, but they tend to be the exception.

I couldnt imagine giving up my pet because their color changed even if it was to white... personality prevails and is what makes me choose well over colorings.... I've come across some animals(rats, ferrets, cats_ that I thought were "OOH ADORABLE" then find them to be nippy, sketchy, and very flighty or in general aggressive which then causes me to change my mind about the animal and look to one that has a good personality despite color. I got my ferret Phoebe, not for her color as I was looking for one with more silvering or a black sable, but because she was such a doll, she was a regular sable but her personality was beautiful.
