A month ago Melissa told me that she wanted to adopt some dumbo rats. They're not a breed as such (though they may be more so than just colour variations) but are noted for their large, low-set ears and outgoing personalities. I though to myself, what a wonderful Christmas present, and after some searching found a hobby breeder in the town of Ayr, about 90 minutes away. I went and visited and met the babies and fell in love with these two: within the hour I was on my way home with a new pair on the passenger seat of the Pontiac.
In front is Munchkin, who was the runt of the litter. She's a hooded Lilac and just darling. Behind is her sister Penny, who is a Lilac self, we think - hard to tell at this age. In the pic they're about 5 weeks old; since then they have doubled in size and developed distinct personalities. They get along with the adults (see http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7251908/) but will live in the travel cage until they get a bit bigger. How we're going to accomodate them all is a bit of a puzzle, but stacking cages and letting them travel at will back and forth may work well. We'll see.
BTW, the babies love to sleep together nose-to-tail in whatever round container they can find - the food dish, the drip pan for their water bottle, and the soup bowl we put in the cage as a bedroom...
