For sketching I usually use a Col-Erase pencil, either blue, light blue, or scarlet or carmine red. They have a waxy texture like colored pencil that's easier for drawing light guidelines and that doesn't smudge quite as easily as graphite does, yet is still erasable (to a degree, as long as you don't grind down into the paper very hard).
