Gold Nomismata coins were mentioned earlier in the story back in Part 5, Page 7. Rossweisse is a fictional story of course, but the setting and some of the characters are based in real history. This coin was made after Romanos was made emperor in 1068, and shows Romanos and Eudokia being crowned by none other than Jesus Christ himself. The other side shows Constantine X's 3 sons who were "co-emperors" officially, but didn't have much real authority. Below is a US penny for scale, and a side view, which shows the coin is concave. The first person who can tell me why it is shaped this way will win a sketch commission of any character who has appeared in the comic.

Yes, you got it.
Coins were all hand stamped by some guys with a pair of dies and a big hammer, so they were not perfectly even like modern coins. Making them shaped like this allowed them to be stacked.
One of the stupider theories I've hear was that you would use the coin to buy a drink, they would pour the drink into the cupped coin, you'd drink it then leave the coin. That would be a very small and expensive drink.
Let me know what you'd like for your sketch.

Because the gold content of the Gold coins became debased with silver. Silver has 1/2 the density of gold so the blank had to be larger to be the same weight. The coins were struck on only one side to speed up the process. When it was done this way the coin assume a cup shape and not a flat one.
