Ah man, I love this one! My complex commissions have been turning out great lately; they sure take a long time but the end result is always really nice.
For this image I started with a really rough WIP that was focused mostly on lighting, which I think was a good way to start. It set the mood for the whole piece, and allowed me to not worry as much about light source and color choices, because I got that all out of the way at the beginning!
The character itself is a red panda with a misanthrope type personality, so I put him in a night scene with papers fluttering around and a single streetlamp above him. It seemed very loner-esque to me, and therefore appropriate. :)

This turned out pretty awesome for a number of reasons.
The actual character herself turned out lovely. The lighting and personality that you're trying to capture turned out perfectly. The pose is also quite good. Really good coloring, really excellent shading- it makes a real nice composition.
Normally I don't focus on the backgrounds too much, but I think it plays a bigger role in this piece. It fits in with what you were trying to show. If I was to say anything bad, I feel like it needs more..motion to it. More vibrance. The coloring and (lack of) detail fit perfectly, it just needs a bit of tuning to really nail what you're wanting.
Honestly though, I love this piece. It's a really awesome style and it's a great beginning to something that I could see being quite big if you choose to keep pursuing it!

Aww man, thank you! Your feedback is always so helpful and appreciated. :) I was hoping the balance between detail and lack of detail was at a good place, and hearing what you think about that gives me exactly the information I wanted to know. Also, thanks for the observation about motion! I added the fluttering papers in to try to make up for the stagnancy in the image, but it was kind of... hrm... subconscious? Now it all makes sense! I was trying to make up for the lack of "life" and "motion." I think. ;D
Again, thanks so much. Your comments are always very insightful and kind, which is super helpful for me as a growing artist. :D
