Who says you only get one chance at happiness?
Deirdre wasn't sure she'd be happy in Oseille. The rabbits were friendly enough, but they were all a little domestic for her taste. She couldn't get interested in the seasonal markets and the visitors who all seemed so exotic to her neighbors paled in comparison to the wonders she had seen.
Still, it made Ciara happy and there really weren't that many places left for her to go, not in Viridis at any rate. The same people who celebrated her daughter as a hero fled inside and locked the doors when they say her coming, except for the rabbits. So she rented a room in the Red Wolf, a tavern run by a taciturn red wolf named Killian, and she did her best to settle into her retirement.
The strange thing was that, after a while, she found she was enjoying herself. Ciara and Niamh invited her to dinner once ever couple of weeks and she had the time now to read all those books she'd always sworn she'd finish someday. With a bit of luck, she might even pick up something that passed for an education. She'd always wanted to know more about the world than just how to kill people.
Best of all, it seemed she had an admirer. She'd found a rose pinned to the door of her room every morning for the last three days, each one the same sort of flower that grew outside the door of the Red Wolf.

I thought it was high time I let poor Deirdre have some happiness in her life. She isn't always gloomy, after all! I really do like this picture for all the reasons you said, plus I'm rather fond of her outfit, too. That's something else she's needed for a while now! I'm glad you liked the little story, too. I'm actually working on something a bit longer for her, too, which actually has to do with her mysterious suitor. If I can get that polished up to suit me I'll post it here.
As for being called cute, I think she'd be flattered. She really hasn't gotten a lot of compliments in her life, and especially not from anyone as cute as you are. (But don't worry. She's not the sort to do anything to people just for sticking their tongues out at her, either. She does have a sense of humor.)

Oh, I really do like this one. It may be different from how Deirdre has often been depicted, but I think it's refreshing for just that reason. I'm very fond of the colouring in the picture, too -- everything is quite calm and peaceful, except for that one little splash of really bright colour in the rose. Finally, I did enjoy the little story vignette as well; it definitely adds an extra something. =:)
I really like it, too, and while you're right that it's pretty different from what I've done with Deirdre in the past I thought it was high time that she got a chance to have some happiness in her life, too. I'm really very fond of her, and I don't want her to be gloomy all the time. That, and it's just a tiny little protest against all those people who seem to think that just because someone else is forty years old, or more, that means they aren't worthy of being loved anymore!
I'm really glad you liked the little story snippet I wrote for her, too. As I said to Eliki, I'm working on something a bit longer that was inspired by this picture as well, but I didn't want to just leave it blank.
