Not at all useless. The numbers revealed do supply information about the sixteen squares adjacent. Enough to reduce the possibilities to only two configurations - and eight of the squares are empty in both of those. So your all-ones finding does actually allow you to safely reveal another eight squares, which will provide enough information to determine the rest of the adjacencies.

I used to set the maximum dimensions with 200 mines. I only beat that once, and then by sheer dint of luck because the last dozen mines or so required guessing to get right!

It's actually kind of funny, I actually used to do the sort of opposite to the poster above me, when I was younger and could never figure out minesweeper... Set it to the maximum dimensions BUT the minimum mines. Suddenly the game's a lot easier now xD
