Speaking in somewhat literary terms, the color white has long symbolized innocence, and red is blood/violence. (it's one of the reasons why in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" the green knight is supposed to be so menacing, because he has bright red eyeballs.) White getting sullied with any color is supposedly like a loss of innocence/fall from grace. So I'm probably reading a bunch into this that you didn't intend. Hehe! ^.^
