It's not very often that an offer from me to do music for someone's game gets turned down, but apparantly the author in charge of this project was doing the music himself as far as I could tell, and wasn't very open to criticism regarding any of his pieces. I wasn't aware of this beforehand, so I already made a demo song in an attempt to sway him from god-awful MIDI BGM. Apparantly, he also was of the type that believed MIDI was superior for game music and that I needed a better sound card because I use standard GM.

Oooo! This is brilliant! The guy making that game is obviously one massive tool for not wanting this. < ^.^ >
That said, I personally would use module files for music in a the game I would like to make one day. Just personal preference, I think. Plus it could keep the download size down.
On that track, however... module file plz! :D Oh wait, you've already got the URL there. Darn it, Benzi, you're doing my job! < u.u >

MIDI *would* be a supirior format if only PC soundcards allowed you to customize your soundbanks. It amazes me that even high-end cards, like my SoundBlaster X-Fi, force you to use SoundFonts (bundles of instruments), rather than let you customize individual instruments, like on keyboards.
Bah. Audio, and audio tools, have never been done very well on the PC.

MIDI was never meant for playback. It was designed as a communication protocol between synthesisers, electronic instruments and other such audio equipment. Therefore, it is inherently inferior for game music because it was designed for something almost, but not quite, entirely different. ;)
AJ Freda is a god damn failure fyi.
He thinks he is infallible, he wont listen to anyone except himself.
point out the fact that most enemies and items are smaller than sonic and he'll freak out on you and ban you from the chat. "I KNOW THE SCALE"
he also has bitched about massive servers being useless because they "cant play games"
Personally the whole game is made of fail. I know people who could prolly rewrite that entire game and finish it in 2 months. this guy has been working on the game for like, what? 6, 7 years now?
I'd take it with a grain of salt.

haha, I really didn't want to name names in all this crap... I learned that one of the nicest dudes who worked on that project is here on FA too under an alias. Every time this drama comes up I feel like apologizing to him profusely, cause I can never remember whether or not I somehow might've insulted him or not
Oops. >.> Well there are some really nice people involved in the fan gaming community... Some of them just end up working on bad teams, or with bad people. Even one of my friends did some work on that game a long time back (early 2000's I think) but AJ ran him off. xD
It was so long ago that I don't even remember all the details. The upshot of the whole thing is... MIDI? I mean come on, MIDI?!

I used to think that way when all I could work with was cheap MIDI shit. MP3 and beyond was this mystical grey cloud of mystery! I went around preaching about getting this soundfont or that one, (usually the former and not the latter) but as soon as I found out I could do MP3s myself I dropped MIDI like it was a bad habbit. XD No one has to get any soundfonts this way, it always sounds good!
