The Three-toed Stargazer, Selenoscopus terrestris, is an ambush predator. Originally found in swamps, where it would wait for prey to become ensnared in the mud, S. terrestris soon developed more sophisticated breathing organs that allowed it to leave the waters frequented by its aquatic forebears.
Three-toed Stargazers were hated by ancient Man, and hunted to near-extinction by the Middle Ages. The only survivors found refuge in the dense jungles of southeast Asia, where they were estimated to cause a few hundred human deaths per year. With the flourishing global sea trade in the second half of the 20th century, however, S. terrestris quickly migrated worldwide and soon learned to adapt to urban living conditions. While campaigns are underway to raise awareness, the public is still largely ignorant of the threat they pose.
S. terrestris possesses two barbed pads on each limb, as well as a sharp claw for immobilizing prey. Its mouth can unfold to a stunning 70cm entrance, enough to swallow a young child in moments. Its flat torso and head allow it to hide anywhere with a 10cm gap - frequently under beds. Its large, upward-facing eyes possess excellent night vision.
So, this is the first creature I've designed myself, and I did so on the fly. Yes, this pic is 100% Av. Hope I give you a nightmare or two.
