So when they don't use designs they paid for, how do the rights to use and publish the designs work? Does whether you or they own the designs depend on what the contract says, or is there a more uniform thing?

Ah, that is a touchy issue. I'm only able to post these now because the Non-disclosure Agreements I signed when accepting the jobs have expired. I in theory I could recycle the designs for some future client but I'd usually do a refreshing of the design to bring them up to date. Also these jobs had the clause allowing me limited portfolio use to show other potential clients. Now if I want I can use them to develop my own finished work.

Those desings are asomw, I really like them. Well done.
