Ft. McGroarty, named after one of my super awesome friends, is a frontier Confederate settlement in the comic "New Worlds". There's a chapter in the future that features an attack from an organized Ataelian army.
I wanted to finish this image before my trip to Edmonton this weekend. I decided to give the Confederate regular infantry blue uniforms with red trim. In the Confederate entry, I drew a guy with a green uniform meant to represent some kind of loosely organized militia. These brave cat gentlemen, here, are the professional deal. The swankified Dustmeat has rendered better reptilian mounts for the Ataelian riders, but I had this image mostly inked by the time she bestowed them on me, so this picture was set. I will probably employ her designs when this battle comes up in the comic, though.

No, no. It's still apt here. The infantry square's still going to be a damn fine defense against cavalry, well into the hay-day of Mr Gatling's curious little toy, especially with the advent of breech-loading cartridge fed rifles. It's really not until we see modern rapid fire artillery that we see big changes in tactics.
Though, I'm willing to be proved wrong.

A great work as always, but sad to say even our own troops found out the hard way unless your foe is going to fight you in a proper manner and form ranks as you do the single shot muzzle loader was a really good club after the ranks were charged and you were fighting natives.
Whoa, god-damn.
I love your use of color - bold, dark colors for the Confederate soldiers, and lighter pastels for the Ataelians.
On the critiquey side...
You put a lot of awesome detail into the Ataelians - armor and markings and even ribbons on her bow - but the Confeds are so simple. It may have been on purpose but I didn't quite buy it, heh :)

I definately buy it; The Confeds are wearing their blue confederate uniforms, essentially mass-produced using simmple cloths, while the ataelians are using war-paint and their own bows; much more customization and personality is allowed when you're not part of an organized fighting force.
(assuming the Ataelians aren't an organized fighting force, of course.)
I will say the insignia marks on the officer's hat is a nice touch though, along with the fact that he's the only one using a pistol and not a musket.
As always, great work! Don't you ever get artist's block??

No doubt about it, this is an amazing picture!, the detail is astounding. The coloring is very impressive too, and I love the whole "clash of cultures" feel.
Now, make no mistake, I love this picture, and it's definitely going into my favs, but I do I have a couple of critiques.
While the scene is amazingly dynamic (and skillfully proportioned!) I do think that the finished product seems to lack a real visceral battle-like feel. The expressions are perfect and the poses are too, but I think that you could have used the blur/motion blur tools a little more to really add an effect. Specifically around the Ataelian who is getting shot off her mount. A little blurring around there would make it really look like she is plummeting.
I do like the color choices you picked out for this picture, as they seem to represent the different cultures splendidly! However, I think that in regards to the battle at hand, a little more dynamic lighting should've been used. I notice this mainly in the uniforms of the Confederate Militia. Again, I really like your choice of color, but I think some more appropriate shading could've made this piece look even more fantastic! For example, the soldiers in the front most part of the picture should be shaded a little darker than the ones near the end of the picture. I think that doing that would've given this picture much more depth, and it would be a lot easier for viewers to pick out the individual soldiers.
Lastly, the details. I've seen this picture from start to finish, and I was impressed from your very first pencil sketch about how detailed you were making this! So please don't take it the wrong way, when I say that this final product (although very impressive) does not seem to have the detailed flare as your sketches did. Now this is really a matter of opinion, but I think that during such a battle, more blood, dirts, scratches, spit, sweat, fur, smoke...etc Basically I think that the picture looks a little too clean. All the uniforms still look crisp and proper, and the Ataelians and their mounts don't have a spec of dirt on them. A few rips and patches in the uniforms, scratches in the dirt, and perhaps some blood around the two fallen soldiers would definitely a little more "battle flare" to the composition.
Overall, I just want to say that I think the final product of this picture is absolutely amazing, and I truly respect the time, blood, sweat, and tears, that you have put into this. I think though, with more blurring, darker shadows, and more battle details, this picture would've been even more amazing! Now, I'm sure that you don't want to work on this picture any more than you already have, so perhaps my advice might help in some of your future pictures :)

Very nice, unusually elaborate picture! I like the musket balls zinging through the air, the sheen of the Confederate bayonets, and the contrast of the scene- the rapid chaos of the cavalry on the left versus the solid, disciplined, immobile infantry on the right. The effect is compounded by your use of color. Jorb well done, mate, well worth the wait!
"Mc" Groarty? cool a fellow "Mc" like me:)
Us Scots are the reason American revolutionaries were such good fighters ;) there's a whole book on "how the Scots changed the world" but I haven't read it....
I'm related to the late, great "Mac Duff" from the famous quote:
"Lay on Mac Duff!" referring to his overthrowing the king or something cant remember too early ;P

We'll the Scots hate the English :P and have been fighting them for years lol that's why some of my ancestors came over to Charleston, SC and its said as soon as they got off the boat they had their riffles ready to fight the British (that was the motivation for moving I guess lol) Course my main tribe, McAffee or MacDuffee (both interchangeable in the old galic texts) was 'disbanded' after the clan cheiften got assassinated and betraid by a Mac Donald ... some kind of conspiracy and it wasn't even an official clan again until like the 1960's or something :P Now we just have a "Clan Commander" since the original cheif bloodline can't be traced (some of us went to Ireland and were like "no we're irish" lol That's how we got Duffee instead of MacDuffee and McGill instead of MacGill..
Hmm, just asking, but who would you say the Ataelians take after the most in terms of tactics and politics? Meso-Americans? The Iroquois? The Sioux? Seminoles? An amalgamation of several different tribes/nations?
I'm on a limb to guess that they're based off of American natives in any way, but to me they seem to be on a similar technological platform.

I remember reading that cossacks would attack the corners of a square formation in order to break it. I would think that hand grenades would be very usefull at this point. I found it odd that when the British attack the American in the war of 1812 and against the Argentine Army in the British Invasions of Argentina in 1806 and 1807 that they were using grenades but not at Waterloo in 1815. Fisk, would happen to know why this is? because I have no idea.
Awesome picture, so good that it warrants my first comment on furaffinity. Does remind me of the infantry at Waterloo.
Early hand grenades had a fuze that the thrower had to light before throwing it (think of the black bombs that looney tunes characters throw around), these were notorious for blowing up in your hand so they faded for a hundred some odd years until technology caught up, so infantry standing shoulder to shoulder like this remained.

I have to say your artwork is real good.
But that's not what takes me back. What I love is your attention to detail, your characters that have a history which most other artist seem to not put in, and also your creation of nations and there relations to each other.
I really hope to see more of this great artwork of yours.

fuck I'm stupid. I'm really new to the fandom so I didn't know your work until I saw the link in your profile info. What I saw was a 1700s naval infantry battalion firing on some night elves. :P
You've got an awesome tri-series thing goin'. Ususally an comic artist sticks to one or two series and elaborates on them; this is unique.
Best scene ever= Fisk slamming the principal in the head with a bat.
I stood up and applauded.

hmmm this is a very alive piece. just wondering werent the confed's wearin rey and the union boys wearin royal blue? ah well, not much of a civila war guy, more of a WWII person myself. any way the coloring, is fantastic, the uniforms are extremely detailed and i love the look on the girls face, its kind of like a last hurah emotion, like this is it. love it ^^ (the raptors are a nice touch as well ^^)
this reminds me oddly of the "zulu" when thousands went up against afew hundred soldiers =3
the soliders had basic one encased bullet rifle and with proper tactics, have been redused to near 40, but fought so hard that the zulu left them alone and sang thier brave warrior song as they left.

As always great work. I do think its a little funny that alot of the fokes keep compairing it to Rorke's Drift where the brits had a some what fortified possition and the Zulu's had a limited attack area. I think it would be safe to say it would have been the battle of Isandiwana where the brits formed ranks and later battle squares to fight. but as I noticed a few commented on breach loading weapons and rappid loading artillery could make all the difference in battle. I guess thats didn't work well for the brits at Isandiwana
