I've been using an electronic flute-ish sample to stand in for a voice for many years (I'm not even sure what it is - I've always known it as In_Flash3). But people have kept on asking me why I don't put my own voice to my music - this brief attempt at the verse and pre-chorus of Navigator should answer their question. I have... the opposite of a power metal voice, although some audio studio editing has helped - you really need to go up to eleven for this genre, and my maximum setting is about 4.
This has actually been around for ages, but I never considered that I would actually upload it publically until now. Perhaps I'm enjoying a boost of confidence, or a lapse of sanity.

That's pretty much my line of thought as well - I apprieciate the compliments I got on it above and know that I can... stay in tune, at least, but there's a certain timbre to the voice that's only really attainable by growing up in Germany or Finland ;) This was just an experiment - I'm still staying with my samples for my main releases, for now.
I know that problem all too well ... even if you actually have a grasp of things like tune and key and such, this is just not a genre where "under the top" is an acceptable form of delivery. I actually can do a just-about flawless Tony Kakko if you assume that the only song that Sonata Arctica ever made in their entire history is As if the World Wasn't Ending. It's ... much less flawless against the likes of Weballergy.
I'm going to take the coward's way and blame my subpar-quality recording equipment (read: crappy ancient microphone that came with my Dell back in 2002, I'm amazed it even passes the "is a microphone" prerequisite for making Skype work) and lack of time to figure out recording software and all that good stuff for why I am conveniently unable to comply in uploaded mp3 format. :) Of course, if you happen to still remember this conversation around FurFright....
It's great to finally hear your voice, and I think it sounds great and records quite well! I think with some practice you'll get better consistency throughout and it will sound even better, buuuuut I think you might be right about not having the right kind of voice for power metal.
I agree on both sides that yes you may not have the voice for it, but with some work you probably be able to sing the songs and fit with the type of genre of music. It takes a lot of guts to post your own voice up on FA when it comes to music. You don't that bad of a voice, you should hear the many others that i've heard i swear my ears were bleeding. you need to practice and maybe switch to a different genre of music.
Well all in all David not bad, I WAS expecting something WAY worse
keep up the good work as always
