Love this! Especially the detail with the scales. Can you offer some advice on making a good scale pattern, or recommend any. Particular tutorials?

The best advice i can give to do scales like this is to start off very messy. You can refine afterwards, so don't worry about it. Just get lots of different colours and shades down, and keep colour picking from what you've already used. Keep your opacity down as well to blend the colours. When refining, always make the tips of the scales lighter and the beginning of the scale darker to give the illusion of them overlapping :)
