Unlike her bashful brother, Yosh, Winry is very outgoing and highly motivated to prove how her differences make her just as good, if not better, than everyone else.
Winry never backs down from a challenge nor accepts when people put her or anyone else down. This commitment created a fierce rivalry between herself and a boy named Flynn Hoot.
Flynn is from an afluent family who firmly believes in the concept of "Trial by Fire". This is why they insisted he go to a public school rather than pursue a specialized education at an upscale academy.
As expected, Flynn's upbringing made him a confident leader who proudly asserts authority in all activities he participates in. Should he fall behind, his family wastes no expense in getting him the tutoring neccessary to quickly overcome any obstacle.
It is, as it has always been, the family's hope that raising their child in a seemingly normal environment will serve him well in expanding upon generations of success.
It should come as little surprise that Flynn's upbringing and heritage incline him to bullying. This is how he came to meet Winry and how their rivalry began.
One day during recess, Winry spotted a group of older kids getting together to start a game of kickball. Being the tomboy that she was, she couldn't help herself but to see if she could get in on the action.
Upon arriving, she was greeted with the same stares she had come to expect from all those who first saw her hybrid form. She was undaunted, though, and asked if she could play. This is when Flynn, one of the team captains, pretty much said every mean spirited thing a kid could say about someone who was younger and/or different from him. The worse of which insulting her brother, who was in Flynn's class, as being "Nerdy, dumb, and worthless."
With burning determination, Winry charged Flynn and challenged him to a distance contest. Being older and undeniably confident, Flynn accepted. He then found himself put in his place when Winry proved she could not only kick the ball further than Flynn, but run faster than him, too!
Flynn caved and said she could play, but she refused. This served as a double insult to him and brought him to use more verbal insults to egg her into battle. Winry didn't fall for it. Rather, she informed Flynn she was going to join team sports and show him what a "freak" could do when she was the one bringing home all the awards for their school.
Needless to say, from that day forth, Flynn and Winry continued their battle of "Whose the Best" up unti the day of their High School graduations. Over time, though, their relationship became less tense and more friendly as they came to respect one another as worthy competitors. They even on-and-off dated and were named Homecoming King and Queen.
What lies ahead for Winry and Flynn? Who knows! What is known, though, is that they both influenced one another in ways they never realized they needed influenced and, for that, they will always be the best of friends.
