A Final Battle~
For the next few days the League of the Watchdog rested and let their bodies heal. While everyone received some nasty bruises and a cut or two, they were sure Eddy and the swordsman had suffered similar if not worse injuries themselves. The reports of Watchdog attacks on the police scanner dropped to a third, and with some calibration Buck was able to locate the tracker and trace its movements to the area of about a city block. He watched and marked the Watchdog's movement on the same crime map he had been using, trying to find out where his hideout could be.
Hawkeye decided not to ask Buck about his new little toy and who it was that sent it to him until they had found Eddy and brought him back. The team was under enough stress as it was without putting mistrust into their heads. The archer had to trust her teammates, even if one of them still lived with his parents and collected every comic book and tabloid she's ever heard of.
As the temporary head of the heroic league, Hawkeye found herself worrying about the morale of the team. She dressed down and into her civilian clothes and made her way to each of the member's homes to check on them. She didn't like everything she heard, but understood. While Tilla, the White Squirrel, claimed that she was sure Eddy would come to his senses and fight off whoever was making him commit all those crimes, her partner in justice Littil, the Black Squirrel, told Hawkeye that Tilla was torn. She had known Eddy for all of her life, and seeing him as an enemy was almost impossible. He himself was hurt that the man who had taught him to defend himself and how to fight the scum of the city has become the very scum he spoke of. It was a very confusing and stressful time for everyone.
By the time Buck had secured a solid lead on Watchdog's criminal hideout, the rest of the team was prepared to face their former leader and friend in battle. Black and White Squirrel, The Reaper, Hawkeye, and even RabbitFoot all prepped their gear and armed themselves for a harsh battle, while Buck kept his ears on the police scanner and eyes on the news. The team knew their mission, and as they made their way to an abandoned office building in the slums of the city, they knew it was them or their friend that was going to go down that night.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The team split up from HQ, each finding their way to the supposed home base of Private Destruction, where Watchdog was sure to be held. Hawkeye took a direct route over rooftops while Reaper followed in the alleys below. Black Squirrel stole a ride on top of a city bus, White Squirrel made a high jump from a tall business building to take the skies, and RabbitFoot just met them there at high speeds. They all gathered outside of the large concrete building, a soft light spilling from the lowest windows.
Without a word, Hawkeye began giving orders. Her hands pointed and motioned at each hero, each nodding their understanding before running off. They needed to catch their prey off guard and from all angles while keeping each other safe, so they split up into teams. RabbitFoot was the only one who would be alone since he could outrun any danger, but Hawkeye and White Squirrel stormed the second floor while Black Squirrel and Reaper took the first. As soon as they entered the building, there was a notable problem. The second through fourth floors had all collapsed, leaving a large gap with only a few scaffolds and pillars holding up the rest of the building. Hawkeye and White Squirrel changed plans and climbed up to the scaffolds, a good thirty feet up, and kept an eye on the floor below while Black Squirrel and Reaper took the room.
Black Squirrel and Reaper kept to the shadows, but as they neared the center of the room, they found their target alone. Eddy stood in the very center of the first floor wearing his traditional Watchdog uniform. His tee-shirt looked dirty and stained from lack of washing, and the disk-launcher on his wrist was unloaded, but he still had on his full utility belt and looked ready to fight, despite his lack of movement. Black Squirrel looked to Reaper, who quickly made the decision to take the instant offensive. He tapped on his earpiece to signal Hawkeye of his plan, and a small tapping sounded back in his ear for approval.
Eddy had been standing with his eyes closed for most of the night, his boss having nothing yet for him to do, but a soft patter of running feet caught his attention. His ears twitched and he turned, opening his eyes in time to see the hooded Reaper running at him at full speed. He had plenty of time to dodge, plenty of time to counter, and plenty of time to scream, but he stood still. Reaper's fist was trained and hard, striking with full force into his side. Eddy held his ground as more blows began to come, a barrage of fists striking his abs and sides until he began to stumble back. As soon as his leg moved to support himself, a quick painful strike hit his thigh, forcing him to one knee, and then a full wind-up hook caught him in the head, sending him to the ground.
Reaper panted, backing away a few steps as she shook out his painful hands. He watched the Watchdog laying on the ground for a few moments before looking back at Black Squirrel who shrugged. This was much too easy... they had prepared for an epic battle, not a sneak up beating.
Hawkeye herself was confused as well, until a sharp slow clapping broke the silence of the building. Private destruction stood at the far end of the building, a thick set of elevator doors silently closing behind her as she applauded. She was ready for battle, it seemed, wearing her mask and black skirted uniform. Her bare feet made no sound as she seemed to glide away from the wall, stopping far from her fallen warrior as she smiled childishly at Reaper.
"Oh that was fun! I've been waiting for you guys for days, and Eddy has been so excited he's barely been able to eat." The little girl jumped excitedly, quickly walking over to one of the support beams of the building, pulling from behind it her lacrosse staff. "I've been wanting to have one last game with you all before you left me and Eddy alone, and I knew you'd be most fun once you've found me. And now here you are!"
Reaper was tempted to make a dash at the villain, but a soft whisper in his ear piece stopped him. Hawkeye gave orders to stand down, then whispering to White Squirrel to prepare for a drop-in attack. As White Squirrel climbed over the edge of the scaffolding, Hawkeye readied and armed her bow with rubber-tipped arrow, watching for Private Destruction to loose her focus. That's when they'd make their strike.
"I bet you thought that you were done, though, huh?" Destruction leaned on her staff and grinned wide. "But I've been planning this little get-together for days. Watchy~!"
Reaper saw movement out of the corner of his eye and glanced over to Eddy, who stood up and cracked his neck, turning to face Reaper with only a bruised cheek to show for his last take-down. The hero took a step back, raising his arms again, ready to fight back.
"Oh! Reapy!" Destruction waved at the hero to catch his attention, though he didn't look at her, focusing on the enemy on hand. "I know you're not alone, so feel free to bring out whoever wants to fight with ya!"
Black Squirrel gulped from where he sat behind a pillar listening, but armed his sling-shot, ready to support Reaper. He peeked from around the corner and watched as Eddy removed his shirt. Everyone but Hawkeye and Destruction felt their breaths catch in their throats as they saw Eddy's exposed torso. Under all of the scars they were used to was a definite root-like protrusion under his skin, stretching across his chest and down his arm starting at one spot in his neck. When he removed his mask, Eddy's eyes were also surrounded by the webbing protrusion, his emerald eyes now faded and misted as they glared lifelessly at Reaper. Without lowering his eyes, Eddy reached bahind him and pulled a shield disk from the back of his belt, securing it to his launcher and cocking the bow back, ready to fire.
As soon as Watchdog began to arm himself, Hawkeye noticed Destruction's attention fully drawn in by her puppet. She quickly hissed at White Squirrel, who dove down from the scaffold and opened her winged arms, aiming her dive at Destruction. Just as she was about to reach her target, Hawkeye took her final aim, but as she let go of the string a hard fist flew at her, striking across her jaw!
White Squirrel flew fast towards Destruction, rolling in mid-air to kick both of her legs at the villain just before impact. Destruction barely was able to raise her staff in time to defend herself, but still fell back hard as White Squirrel landed and quickly pulled out her own staff. She hesitated as Destruction got up, waiting for a certain arrow to aid her battle, but Hawkeye's shot flew past her head and landed far from it's target, the shaft shattering as it struck the concrete ground. White Squirrel looked back, shocked that Hawkeye would ever miss, and her eyes went wide as she witnessed her leader already in a fight of her own...
Hawkeye had been hit hard, but she quickly rolled out of the way before getting struck a second time. She rubbed her cheek with one hand as her other held her bow, looking up at her assailant. It was the boy she had fought in the alley, the one who was aiding Watchdog. The hand he struck with was too hard to be natural, and as he raised his hands to lower his hood, it became obvious why. While his right hand looked normal though wrapped in cloth, his left was not flesh. It was made of what looked like wood. Hawkeye could just make out what looked like similar roots pushing up the boy's arm from within his sleeve that Eddy had, and as the hood fell she saw more roots growing across his face and his large white ears. from his back, the boy drew a katana, and Hawkeye gulped, quickly pulling another arrow. This wasn't going to be easy...
RabbitFoot saw all of this from outside, feeling a slight panic in his heart. "Oh wow.... oh wow oh wow..." He felt himself bouncing on the balls of his feet, but he didn't know where to run. Eddy was right in front of him, but he moved behind pillars as he began his battle with Reaper. Hawkeye was up on the scaffolding, out of reach, and White Squirrel was way off in the back of the building with Destruction. A loud voice finally sounded in his ear.
"RabbitFoot, where are you!?" It was Black Squirrel. "We could really use some help, and you're the one with the happy feet!"
"I, uh... Oh how do I put this? Bunny runs too fast for these halls."
"...What?"
RabbitFoot pulled at his hair and gritted his teeth. "I MEAN that I can't run through all these pillars! I'd be dodging left and right so fast I'll hit one and break my freakin legs! I can only make fast straight movements!"
"When were you going to tell us this!?"
"Well it wasn't important until now! Everything was out in the open and all! I usually get close and just mess with them with fast hands... I don't like, FIGHT people, okay!?"
Black Squirrel was done arguing and leaned out from his hiding spot, taking aim at Eddy. Eddy had been taking and dealing blows with Reaper, either one looking bruised but otherwise unhurt. A quick whistle and Reaper jumped to the side, tucking and rolling out of harm's way as Black Squirrel launched a few 'acorn' shots at Eddy. The metal acorns struck at Eddy's face and neck, stunning him for a moment, giving Reaper another chance for a barrage, but Eddy recovered too quickly and shoved the boxing-hero away. Eddy dodged another incoming acorn as he reached into his belt, slamming a ball to the ground and shrouding himself and Reaper in a cloud of smoke.
"Shit!" Black Squirrel couldn't see a thing, but heard strikes coming again and again from the smoke. Reaper needed assist, but the squirrel couldn't just shoot wildly into the smoke cloud.
"Hey! I can help here!" RabbitFoot got down and ready to run. "Watch for a clear shot!" The rabbit dashed from his position outside of the building through the doors and to the other side of the room, straight through the smoke. He stopped at the far wall, but before Destruction of White Squirrel could even see him he had turned and dashed back out. He did this again and again, the wind he dragged with him clearing the smoke until Black Squirrel could see Reaper, who had lost his hoodie and looked roughed up, and a tall shadowy figure deeper in the misty smoke.
"Thanks RabbitFoot!" The squirrel took aim and whistled again as he launched. Reaper dodged just in time, but Eddy's arm rose, deflecting Black Squirrel's shot with his shield. The mutt then aimed and shot his shield at where the acorn came from, the disk flying fast at the hiding squirrel. "Oh crap!" Black Squirrel was just able to duck as the disk flew over his head and deflected off of the pillar he had been using to hide. The disk flew off and shattered through a window, and when he looked up, the squirrel saw Eddy had already re-armed himself. "Damn it... He knows I'm here, shooting is useless..." Black Squirrel reached behind him and put his slingshot into his utility belt, picking up his telescoping batons instead. "Time we get in close..." He dashed into the battle, hoping he'd be able to keep Eddy from hurting Reaper too badly...
High above the battle, Hawkeye bit her lip and cursed to herself. This opponent was being too difficult for his own good. He stayed back from the archer, but easily deflected her arrows with his swift sword, and every time Hawkeye turned to try and assist White Squirrel the wood-handed boy would dash in and attack! Hawkeye glanced back down to see how White Squirrel was doing, and swore again as she saw Destruction slam her staff into the other girl's stomach and kick her away. White Squirrel was talented and determined, she wouldn't go down easily, but she wasn't in Destruction's class. The villain had fought too many people and didn't think rationally before she struck. White Squirrel needed help, but once again as the archer turned to launch a helpful arrow, a blade flew down at her, and she was forced to dodge.
"This is getting old..." Hawkeye dropped her bow and pulled a pair of sleek long knifes from her belt. "I'm going to have to take you down fast... My friends need me." The swordsman didn't answer even with his expression, holding his sword ready to fight. Hawkeye dashed at him, deflecting a sword blow as she lunged with her second knife...
The battle raged on for what seemed like hours, and everyone was being worn down. White Squirrel was taking the worst of the damage, having no one to back her up as she tried taking on the head of the villainous trio, but even injured she was finding that she was starting to dodge more and more of Destruction's blows. Destruction herself was clenching her teeth as she beat restlessly at the hero in front of her. Tears of blue blood dripped from her eyes to soak into her mask gone unnoticed by her opponent, the stress of keeping control of her puppets while fighting for herself was taking it's toll quickly, though she couldn't stop without loosing. Eddy had been able to hold off both Black Squirrel and Reaper for the most part, though his vision was blurred, blood dripping into his eyes from a cut on his head. Reaper was deaf in one ear from a dirty trick Eddy had pulled, using an electric dog-whistle and holding it to the side of his head. Luckily, RabbitFoot was able to dash by and pull the device away before he lost hearing permanently. Black Squirrel himself had pushed Eddy far, attacking the back of his legs and striking the cut in the mutt's head with his batons, but a solid kick to his ribs left him open to be grabbed and thrown into one of the large pillars, bruising his ribs badly.
Hawkeye was pushing her offensive, and felt she would soon take her opponent out, but it wasn't without injury. A fine slice crossed the heroine's cheek and her clothes were cut in multiple close calls. Her knives were chipped and loosing their edge against the masterful katana, but she had pushed the swordsman back further and further without backing off, and she had a full plan in her head that she was finally ready to put into motion. Without hesitating, Hawkeye ran again at the boy, watching his blade fly towards her side. Her first knife rose, striking the sword away as small blade finally shattered. As the sword came down again, she used her second knife to catch the base of the blade and push the boy to the edge the end of the scaffold against one of the many windows of the building. For a moment she seemed unable to attack further, with her first knife broken, but she flicked her wrist, a confiscated butterfly knife locking it's blade before stabbing hard into the boy's wooden hand! The boy gritted his teeth and glared at Hawkeye, but she only needed to twist and pull with her now free hand to pull the boy's sword away, which she threw out of the broken window.
"Don't play with knives, boy." Hawkeye ran from the unarmed swordsman and sprinted to retrieve her bow. She pulled a rubber-tipped arrow as she ran, and armed the bow the second it was in her hand. She began to aim down, but saw the boy pull free out of the corner of her eye. "Should have stayed down." She turned and shot, and without a sword to defend himself, the boy took the arrow in the middle of his head. Hawkeye re-armed her bow with another special arrow as the boy stumbled, falling over the edge of the scaffolding. With a careful practiced shot, Hawkeye let her special arrow fly again, striking through the hood of the boy's hoody. A line followed the arrow, who's tip expanded into a barbed hook, and connected to a reel on a carabiniere on Hawkeye's belt. The heroine quickly slapped the carabiniere onto the scaffolding, the line going taught as the hook sank into the boy's hoody. Hawkeye was looking back down at the battle before the boy began to dangle by his clothes, safely caught by his own clothes.
Finally rid of her opponent, Hawkeye scanned the battleground. White Squirrel looked beaten badly, but she was holding her own against Destruction, who seemed to be weakening. Reaper and Black Squirrel, however, weren't doing as well. In the last moments of her battle it seemed that Eddy had caught Reaper with his lasso, but RabbitFoot was able to quickly use the line against Eddy and tie him up. The rope laid in a pile, sliced up with no doubt the Watchdog's emergency knife. The rabbit was nowhere to be seen, hiding probably, but Reaper was still trying to fight. Eddy was holding his doggy-paddle, attacking with careful yet heavy strikes to keep the Reaper at a fair distance. Black Squirrel was struggling to stand, a doggy-disk lying next to him.
This battle had gone on too long. Everyone was tiring and injured, but Eddy was barely slowing down. Re-thinking her strategy, Hawkeye dropped her rubber-tipped arrow and pulled out a steel pointed. She fired quickly almost straight down, and listened to the whistle of her arrow before it sank deep into Eddy's leg. The mutt yiped loudly and stumbled onto his knees.
"Everyone listen up!!" Hawkeye yelled, her team quickly listening as they all tried to keep their footing in front of their enemies. "Eddy is not our friend right now, he's our enemy! If we can't strike at him with our full strength, then we'll never win! We have to strike like we mean to kill, or he'll never fall!"
Destruction screamed and swung her staff down at White Squirrel, who scurried out of the way just in time. The villain raised her head, panting as blue blood dripped from her lip and eyes. "You don't even know what you're saying, Cadhla!" The battle seemed to pause for a moment, eyes drifting from Hawkeye to Destruction as they glared each other down. The team looked at each other worriedly, wondering how the villain knew Hawkeye's real name. "You say that like it's an easy thing. Ha! If you meant those words, you would NOT have shot for Eddy's leg! If you want your people to try and kill Eddy, Why not shoot him right now!?"
Hawkeye gritted her teeth and took aim with her bow down at Eddy, but she couldn't let her arrow go. She knew where her arrow would strike, and what it would do to the hero she had followed. "...I..."
"You can't! Hahaha!" Destruction straightened herself, supporting herself with her staff. "You're a huge hypocrite, Cadlha! You want your friends to fight harder when you've already hit your own limit!" Destruction snapped her fingers, Eddy standing up from the ground with out even a groan. His face never changed expression, showing no pain or fear as he reached down and pulled the arrow from his leg, blood spilling down and soaking his pant let and bare feet. "Now, will you run, little heroes? Or will you fight your friend to the death!?"
Hawkeye's arrow shook as she tried to fight herself into firing while the rest of her team fought to stand. They all held their hands to their weapons, fighting with themselves as they weighed their options. Eddy would not stop, he would kill them without hesitation, they were sure... but could they do the same thing to win? And if they did, would that make them just as bad as the villains?
Destruction began to giggle, but her large ears twitched at the sound of a near-by engine roaring. The heroes heard the noise to and lifted their heads. The sound got louder, and they all looked to one wall with a large metal door, where the noise was coming from.
"Hey!" RabbitFoot dashed in, wide-eyed and panicked. "Look out!"
Reaper barely had time to jump out of the way as a large car crashed through the metal doors and right towards the center of the building. RabbitFoot dashed forward and tackled Black Squirrel out of the way just in time, and the heavy car slammed it's brakes and fishtailed, Eddy not able to move in time as the back of the care slammed into him, sending him sprawling across the floor. Everyone stood dumbfounded as they looked at the car.
It was large and black, like a Cadillac but with no brand markings except for a paw-print insignia. The passenger door opened and out stepped... Buck?
"Guys! Don't interfere! Trust me I'll explain later!"
Hawkeye screamed down from the scaffold, "Buck!? What are you..." She stopped at the driver's door opened. Out of the car stepped out what she assumed was a guy armed to the teeth and fully armored. He looked like he had stepped out of a swat-team movie, a visored helmet shielding his face from view and Kevlar plating all over his body, chest legs and all. Grenades strung across his chest while batons and cans of gas went over his back. Pouches and holsters sprung from his hips and legs and even arms, and in his hands was a large shotgun. "...Buck, who is that!?"
"I...I said I'd explain! Just trust me, please!" Buck looked panicked himself as he looked from Hawkeye to the stranger who was walking towards Eddy, who was beginning to stand again.
The stranger pushed something on his helmet, a very bright green light flashing again and again into the mutt's face. Eddy was blinking and holding a hand up to shield his eyes, but that's when the stranger fired the shotgun with a deafening BOOM! And she shot again, BOOM! And again. BOOM! Three shots rang out, and Eddy fell to the ground, staggering to try and stand as small beads from the bean-bag shots scattered across the ground around him. The stranger slung the shotgun over his shoulder and quickly drew out two taser pistols, shooting off both, four electric pins sticking into Eddy's chest before the mutt began to spasm on the ground.
All anyone could do was watch wide-eyed as the stranger walked quickly up to the shocked mutt and kick him hard across the face. Without ever loosing speed, the stranger pulled out a syringe and emptied it into Eddy's neck. Replacing his weapons into his belt, the stranger cuffed Eddy and dragged him by his legs to the car. The trunk popped and Eddy was tossed inside.
"Uh..." Buck rubbed at the back of his neck. "I'm sorry guys... I'll see you at base... Sorry..." Without anything else really to say, Buck clambered into the car, which squealed away out of the building.
Everyone rubbed their eyes and tried to think of what had just happened, but Destruction was the first to react. Shefell to her knees, her hand shaking as she began to cry. "Why…? You took him away again. I wanted to keep him happy, to make him play with me, but you had to take him away again." No one spoke, unable to think of what could be said, but the strange boy with the wooden hand slipped from his hoody and fell to the floor, running to his master's side. "You will all pay... You'll pay for taking him away!" Tears mixed with the blood dripping from Destruction's eyes as she twisted her lacrosse staff, pulling it into two pieces. On the inside of the staff was a button, and she pressed it hard, the building beginning to shake as explosives began to go off underneath them. As the sound grew louder and the building began to shake badly, The League quickly made their escape! Hawkeye threw one more glance at Aea, the little girl being lifted up by her servant with the wooden hand as the walls started to shake apart around them. Even as the building collapsed, she couldn't help but think at least they had succeeded in their goal to capture Watchdog. Or so she hoped.
The group of heroes found RabbitFoot outside, who told them he had already called 911. They all helped to carry each other away from the building, needing to find the closest safe house and receive some first aid.
"Buck..." Hawkeye gritted her teeth. "You will have some explaining to do when we get back..."
The radio in her ear buzzed as Bucked quiet nervous voice sounded on the other side. "I know... but Watchdog is safe... Trust me."
"We'll see..."
