Another commission for
cloudy of his pirate magpie character, this time getting drunk at a bar all alone lol
I am attempting to put more atmosphere in my drawings, so hopefully this is getting there.

I think you're doing a great job adding atmosphere! May I make a suggestion? This piece might have added mood by adding a second color, I can see some shade of red-violet or indigo in the shadows to accentuate the light you halo'd around the face. :3 Sorry! I think it's freaking amazing!
background/context isn't necessary to create atmosphere.

Megan Vossler is an artist who does this really well; her pieces are chock-full of atmosphere and very emotionally charged and interesting, despite complete lack of context or background. This one is one of my favourites
There's plenty of other artists who go the other way, build up an extremely detailed background/context rich enough to instill their work with whatever atmosphere they choose (you're doing something more like that in this one http://www.furaffinity.net/full/7196937/ ). There are no rules here.
But frankly, if your art isn't trying to say anything, there will be no atmosphere in your work, no matter what you put in the positive and negative space.
I'm not trying to be uber critical. I like your drawings a lot
http://www.furaffinity.net/full/7137801/ i.e. this one, great atmosphere in this, though you've only drawn the figure. It may be 'silly vent art', but because it actually has some emotion to it, some personal significance (whether yours or mine, no matter), it strikes me as much more successful and interesting than this drawing right here.
feel free to tear this apart if you don't appreciate random criticism or think i'm full of shit, i'd be interested to hear what this provokes

No, you aren't wrong or anything, so there's no need to "tear you apart"
I agree with you, especially about the pieces you chose to point out, from other artists and myself.
I used to do more atmospheric, surreal, moody art when I was a teenager, and ever since art college I have kind of settled into this quick, blunt, simple style that I can create art quickly and efficiently with.
I have lost the patience to sit and draw inspired meaningful pieces as much as I used to, and especially with commissions it is very difficult to inject that moody, atmospheric element, for me, especially if the customer has no idea what they want.
I would say it's more of a lack of inspiration that causes my art to be bland and boring. Every once in a while, I will get a good idea for a picture that would really impact the audience, but then I either don't feel like drawing or draw like shit when I sit down to try. Sometimes I can do it, like with the couple pictures you linked, which are both pictures I did for myself, fueled by the feelings of either a song or my emotions.
And the irony of the whole thing is, people don't respond as positively to my vent art, or emotional art. They all seem to like the more marketable stuff I do, so idk.
I really wish I could crank out those crazy metaphorical pieces one after another, but I just don't have the energy or ability to do that as much as I used to.

well, you should ask yourself your reason for making something. Is it your audience? (furaffinity...?) or is it something different?
there's not really a right answer there. for most people it's a lil of both probs. so i guess maybe it's more a question of reconciling the two.
just some thoughts that troubled me back when i put shit up here
