As a child of the 80s, video games pretty much defined the entirety of my youth. And of all the videogames out there, none captured and inspired me quite like Dragon’s Lair. Not only did it have swords, magic, dragons, and knights, but it was a cartoon… that you played. I’m pretty sure it broke my young mind (not to mention my wallet). But still, it inspired countless fantasies of being Dirk the Daring, storming the castle, battling its unforgettable minions, and dying in the most horrible and hilarious ways possible.
FCN 2010 was 80s-themed, and I knew that Marymouse, its GoH, shared my love for that decade. So I gave her the idea of putting Xyk into a classic videogame of her choice, and to my supreme delight, she chose Dragon’s Lair. After all, I cannot deny that there’s a fair amount of Dirk in Xyk, with all his bumbling about -- not to mention perpetual suffering. Mary did such a fantastic job in recreating the all the classic Bluth imagery, of which I am perpetually fond. It makes me want to dig up my copy of the game, play it all over again, and marvel at the delicious potency of childhood nostalgia.
