Dice mid-transformation into his phoenix form. I had a lot of fun painting this. Used slightly different technique than usual but more or less similar to how I usually paint.

I started with four layers on which I slapped the rough colours. One of the background sky, one for the pinkish purple smoke, one for the teal smoke, and then one for Dice. I only did this so I could adjust the colours of the smoke and sky layers completely separately until I had a colour combination I liked. Then I merged all of them together and painted everything as I normally do, on the same layer.
Try starting with all dark values and layer the lights on top of it while you shade. It's more natural for a lot of artists to build light on top of dark rather than adding shadow to light. It has something to do with the fact our eyes are drawn to light over shadow. It helped me a lot when someone suggested I try that.
