THE SHATTERED SKY is full length epic science fiction; a tale of love, adventure, and sacrifice one hundred thousand years in the future amongst the ruins of a cosmic megsatructure.
One hundred thousand years in the future, the solar system as we know it is gone. In its place, billions of slowly-failing fragments of a shattered Dyson Sphere haunt the sun, holding the last remnants of humanity and and its daughter races.
Gossamyr is an apprentice shaman of a small transhuman tribe on one of the last functioning habitats, until contact with the advanced human society of the Known Nations changes everything she thought she knew about her world. Plunged into a perilous odyssey across the vast cosmic ruins of the Sphere, she is forced to decide the destiny of her people...and perhaps that of all humanity.
Enter a world of megastructures and nanotech magic, of superscience and transhuman intelligence, of love and terror and sacrifice, in this epic science fiction adventure!
This is by far the best and most epic story I've ever written. If you like scifi, mind-blowing technology, high adventure, and improbable romances, then enter a world unlike any you've seen before. You won't be disappointed.

Of special interest to some here, THE SHATTERED SKY was always meant to be the conceptual sequel to my earlier anthropomorphic scifi novel CREATURA. Though it takes place in a very different setting, it explores many of the same themes and ideas of the relationship between humans and the anthropomorphic races they may someday create. if you are a fan of anthropomorphic fiction, you should definitely give it a look.

I am reading this now, and am about 11 chapters in. I have a Disagreement with one quote. Gossamyr said that Her experiments with the bewildering garment called a 'Bra' are best left undetailed. Not only should this be detailed, but pictures shown. I would think they could wear a french wrap, couldn't they?
lol. The best I can do in that regard is a sketch I did of Gossamyr a few weeks after I published the book online:

A french cut (as in the bathing suit, I'm guessing) would work, but she would be getting what bras she had from female explorers passing through on helistats, and for the most part I imagine they'd pack mostly workaday practical bras. Or if they did have any fancy bras, they'd probably want to hold onto them as it could be a year or more in some cases before they could replace them.

Thank you. I am going to try to get a fur-rend I know to read it, but she is short on budget. Does Smashwords allow gifting? (you pay for something and another email address downloads it?) She plays as a little brown bat on FM.
I LIKE this. the idea of a Dyson Sphere is a Science Fiction staple, but I think you would need all the asteroids in a solar system to build it, plus a large amount of material from outside the solar system. After you got it all built, what about pressure? wouldn't the the star eventually cause the inside of the sphere to pressurize? the solar wind with no outlet? And how would Luna feel about giving up her moon for this? Whole bunch of things to think about. I keep thinking the Helistats are a lot like that thing that the marvel universe insists is a aircraft carrier in the sky with the S.H.I.E.L.D group, but more streamlined.

Smashwords does allow gifting. There should be an icon for gifting on the side of the book's page under 'add to cart'.

For some technical aspects, I do address some things later in the book, but of course I don't know how far you've gotten. But some technical details:
They disassembled the entire solar system, asteroids and planets both, to build the Eden Sphere.
The Sphere was not one huge habitat or unified unbroken structure. It was actually made up of many millions of individual independent habitats. Most were relatively small (think O'neill colony) but some were gargantuan. Think of the Sphere like a huge sheet of spherical bubble wrap; the bubbles would have been the habitat and the sheet itself would have been support structure. Only in this case many of the 'bubbles' would have been all different shapes and sizes.
The Solar Wind and light pressure was in fact used to help keep the sphere's structure intact, like air pressure in a balloon., with ways of relieving the pressure if needed The structure would have been built with that in mind. The engineers would ahve taken advantage of all the natural phenomena they could to make things work.
Luna and Celestia transformed the Moon into a garden world maintained by magic, and moved all the ponies there before construction of the Sphere was ever begun. The ponies and their princesses now roam the galaxy o it, living in crystal moon cities surrounded by verdant forests, exploring wonders we have yet to dream of. ;)

You have a book full of interesting lines that could not possibly be found anywhere else. to wit: Not in front of the Incestuous, Cannibalistic Tarantulas... I am sure it will get better from here. I am slightly amused by the mysterious "Others". what if they were part of the AI's built to do the eden sphere maintenance? they can't physically retrieve their widget for they have no bodys to do it with... shows you how far along I am in this book...
So, When is the sequel coming out? I am done with the Shattered Sky. Post reading thoughts: I suppose DNA mixing is as effective a good lay, but not as satisfying. This needs a Sequel, to see if Kalen can rise to power and not become a new Autocrat. To see Llexa have it's children fly again. Still, it was an interesting ride. from humble shameness in training to goddess and back to shameness. You never showed the OTHERS on camera. Would the Turing police go after them? you showed the Cephalopods only as bad guys. are they all united in that? Are the Cephalopods the foe that the builders found in deep space? Were they the ones who shattered the sphere? There's so much left to explore here, Mr. Lucas, Please don't consider yourself to be "Done".
I really liked the Spider Swarm concept. I had seen a hive mind before in Phoglio's Psmith, (a substory in the Buck Godot comic) but never as small and as portable as the Dumas and later D'artagnan examples. I did note that he happily played on others Arachnophobia, and poor Zell (I had heard that name from a Steve Gallacci one shot of the same name) had a full swarm teasing her.
So what's next? where are you going to go with it? Inquiring minds want to know....

truthfully I'd love to do a sequel, maybe two. I do consider Gossamyr's story to be more or less done, but I already had some plans for stories set in the same world, with some of the same characters who appeared in The Shattered Sky. But The Shattered Sky was such a huge undertaking I'm not sure I'll be able to get around to it anytime soon. Maybe if there's enough demand from fans over time i can start prioritizing it more, so don't be afraid to recommend the book to others if you get a chance to build some of that interest =p.
I'm glad you liked the book though! i really am proud of what I was able to do with The Shattered Sky and I hope to keep putting works out like it. Thanks again!

I am thankful you ended it with a happy ending. Gossamyr gets two babies to replace the one she had to kill herself. I can only imagine what kinda mom she will be when the kids get to their teens. "I brought you into this world, I can take you out".
Still, there is fertile ground for more stories, a Helistat combat novel, (think any of the capital ship actions in any of the wars) Another group who's goal it is to re-unite the shards, and have the monumental occasion of it happening once on camera.
One thing I must mention. every Tuesday nights at 6pm pacific/9pm eastern there is on the chat muck "FurryMuck" a Short Story Night. where authors read chapters from storys they are working on. if you're not working a mundane job this would be great for you to see. you don't HAVE to contribute, but it's nice when you do.
I suspect that at the moment you are scribbling furiously over Tobias meeting the Elvish enclave in the NW of the Mad King's Road series.
of course, you can't have Gossamyr meet Tobias, but I am sure you could have him meet a race of little brown bats there.
I will indeed mention The Shattered Sky to anyone who will listen to me. Especially my friend, Keesha who plays a little brown bat herself.
what other books have you out?

I hope you can do a sequel! I think I mentioned this in my Amazon review of the eBook as well. There is a TON of potential for fleshing out more of the world, its history, and new characters to explore! I'd love to learn more about them!
The book was a masterpiece, though. I powered through it and was hooked from a few pages in. I loved the style of telling everything from the perspective of Gossamyr, internal dialog and all. Her feelings came through loud and clear. I honestly didn't feel like I was just watching the events. I felt them as if I was Goss, herself, experiencing the events in real time as they were told.
You did a great job and I commend you for it! :)

I take it you liked the book then?
Sandcasters come from the tabletop RPG Traveller. Probably me and the other guy both got it from there.
I looked around the website you linked to. It looks pretty interesting, but there's a LOT there. It will probably take me a while to go through it.

I happened to do a search for 'Uplift' on this site, since I used the same term on my latest picture. I found your book, and now it's ordered.
Also I happen to give this link to a friend, and his quote:
"Okay... there goes my PayPal allowance."
[giggles] I think you won two more fans, sir.

I'm afraid not. The Shattered Sky took a lot of work and years to write, and it never sold that well, so there wasn't a whole lot of motivation for me to keep going with it, especially since the book already said a lot of what I wanted to say with that setting anyway. I would have put just as much time and effort into a sequel only for even less of a return. I would like to do more with that setting, but it just wouldn't be worth it.
But please do check out my other works if any appeal to you. The Shattered Sky was probably my very bets work, but I'm a decent storyteller with other settings and characters too. = )
