It's easier when I don't have to express that it's a very dark room. So, with the lighting the way it was that was quite challenging. Big mistake I made though was using ivory black. Here I used my new graphite set, and though I'm not quite there yet it's a nice step. Didn't quite get raped by the scanner too.

Perhaps my coloured pencils are not the ideal combination, but I'll do some more texture research. I've done some experiments with graphite and charcoal to see how they reflect light and attach to paper, and that does tell you quite a bit. But, don't worry, I'm still not pretentious enough to claim I know what I'm doing. :D Thanks for the encouragement!
Well, I've found they don't work well with colored pencils, but they can get into smaller spaces than a finger. But you can't always shade something light just after shading something dark. And I think they are mostly for the artists that don't like outlines, or at least that is how my highschool art teacher told me how to use it. :3
