“Damn, I just hate mornings, even more when I’m woken up by force!” Jason said as he tries with his eyes closed to turn down the volume of his clock radio. The fox surely knew better that to turn it off completely, as he would just fall asleep again, and hitting snooze would only waken him up again later on and he would still be sleepy.
“...IS FINALLY HERE, SO MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEEDS FOR THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL ...” Jason finally got a grip on the switch and turned the volume down with a spin of his paw.
‘School’, Jason thought. ‘So boring... I guess I’ll still see my all friends at dinner at least. And Sam. Wonder what they’ve been up to all summer.’
“You know, my own kid Sebastian is starting today!” said one of the animator.
“Really? Was he nervous?” replied the other.
“Well he didn’t seem too much like it, but I sure am for him. What if he loses himself in one of the hallway and no one’s there to help him out?”
“No one to help him out in a school hallway? Well you surely have too much imagination when you’re nervo-“
Jason switched the radio off, having heard enough of this stupid talk to actually look forward to get out of bed. ‘Come on!’ Jason thought, ‘is your son going to preschool or is it you?’
Almost all his days of summer, Jason did nothing more interesting than entertaining himself in front of his laptop or television, depending of the quality of the show that played so it would get worth the pain of hearing loud commercial breaks after each five minutes or so. As for the guitar, well, most of the time he wouldn’t be inspired enough to play some. And besides, his family would complain most of the time that he was making too much noise at night because he liked to be awake at night. Nights were so peaceful, that’s part of why he hated mornings too.
Snapping out of it, he quickly hops in the shower, located in the basement besides his bedroom, to wake up some more. The hot water felt good on his fur as he was scrubbing quickly all of his body parts. He had flashy orange fur almost everywhere, like every other fox, except for the inside of his ears, his lower jaw and the insides of his stomach, chest and arms. His legs were a darker share of orange thought.
It was a particularly cold day today; he could feel it even in the comfort of home, so he took more time than usual under the hot water. He then went for the dryer, leaving water dripping from his fur all over the carpet. Otherwise it would take forever for him to dry up in the morning with only towels or regular air-dryer.
He then went for a closer look at himself in front of the mirror. His furry face looked fuzzy so he decided to brush his fur a little so it wouldn’t hand in every direction. He brushed his teeth clean and decided to add some perfume over his neck scruff. “Like anyone would notice”, he said to himself with exasperation. Jason didn’t like the “first impression” thing everyone was putting for an important meeting, he didn’t care for much himself. He only went along because he didn’t want to hear his parents sermon him about how important this is.
He ate cereals with milk, grabbed his schoolbag and started to pack it up. Like it wasn’t enough pain, the meeting was scheduled at eight o’clock am, and he had to take thirty minutes just to get to school on bus. Hopefully, he wasn’t that far from the bus stop so he didn’t have to walk much when he was tired in the morning; which was like...all the time.
He got on the bus at 7:15 after five minutes of waiting and quickly looked for a seat where his friend was sitting. Strangely, he didn’t see the wolf anywhere so he took an empty, quiet seat at the back.
‘It’s not his style to skip school like that, even less on the first day. I guess he just didn’t see the point of sleeping through the endless speech of welcoming student if he could just sleep in bed’, he thought.
Thirty minutes has passed and he finally got out into the cool air again. First was the meeting at the auditorium, which would take an hour and a half. He searched through the crowd at the gymnasium, which was filled with aligned chairs in rows and columns, to try spotting one of his friends, but the room was packed. Jason just sighed, took a seat at the back and discretely put earplugs of his iPod on. The student then got their agendas once it was over and they were all gone for lunch break. Jason finally spotted the black wolf standing up in front of a table at the cafeteria, talking to two otters.
The wolf was easy to spot since he was 6 foot and 8 inch tall, and pretty well build even for his size. To the fox’s knowledge, the wolf has always been bigger than his normal size, even when they were cubs. He played football in college, and most of his high school years too. Although people could easily identify him as a jock, sport wasn’t his entire center of interests and he was looking forward to become a scientist or an engineer. He was in the same program as Jason, although Jason didn’t know what to do with his life. He just took this program because it was the most opening career program they offered. He still had time to decide, he told himself often.
“Hey, Mark”, Jason said casually behind his back. “I haven’t seen you this morning on the bus.”
“Oh yeah? Well, I was kinda hoping to surprise you this morning by picking you up in my brand new car my dad bought me last week, unfortunately I was late this morning and you weren’t at the bus stop anymore.” The wolf had an almost apologizing face.
“You had a car for a week and you didn’t tell me? You can be so cruel sometimes!”, Jason responded with a playful grin. “What kind of car?”
Mark chuckled at the surprised expression on the fox’s face. “It’s a Mazda 3, 2008. With this baby I would never be late for school if it wasn’t for those stupid speed limits on the road.” Mark started bursting out laughing at his own comment.
“Yeah, yeah, I get it”, said Jason with a slight tone of jealousy. “And what about you two, I didn’t see you at all this summer?” Jason said innocently, looking at Sam awkwardly.
“Well, I was pretty busy, with work and all”, said Ricky, with is usual vagueness answer when he didn’t want to talk about it.
Ricky worked at a construction site with his father, making often overtime to earn more money. He had to pay part of his scholar bills to actually attend it, since their parents weren’t all that rich, although he didn’t seem all that interested in his classes.
Well, if he doesn’t want to talk about it, screw him. It’s fine; I never was really friend with him anyway. They would only hang out because of Sam, really.
“And what about you, Sam?”
Sam looked stunned for several seconds before finally deciding to speak. “Oh, I did lots of fun stuff; I went camping near a river fall and it was awesome, I did some swimming in the lake, I even went on a plane trip with my uncle who knows how to pilot and we took off flying and then we-” Sam were cut off by Jason.
“Hey Sam, calm down, it’s still early for me, I’m not a robot”, Jason said, trying to put a fake smile.
Sam always seems to be in a good mood. I don’t know where he gets all his energy from, but most time Jason couldn’t keep up with him since he talked pretty fast. They hung out a lot at school last year and he saved the fox’s ass quite a few times when he was in trouble. Jason knew better than to talk to him though the few times he wasn’t in his usual mood. Sam wasn’t the kind of person to share feelings with. Considering all the time we’ve known each other, he still didn’t seem to trust Jason, so he didn’t want to talk about his problems. Anyway, like he cared now what the otter was feeling...
“Sorry.” His ears dropped down and he went silent.
We all sat at the table to eat lunch. No one spoke, since everyone seemed like they hasn’t eaten in days and just bolted down their food. Once lunch was over, Mark told us how he got his car. He said it was a present for entering college and that it would be nice as an adult to have a car to get around since he lived far from school. He lived three streets away from Jason’s house and they knew each other since elementary school. It has been a long way between the two of them.
Everyone listened placing a few comments like “You’re really lucky”, not wanting to disrupt his story, while Sam kept quiet for a change. ‘You better!’ Jason thought. Then it was time to get our schedules and meet our teachers. They would call every name one by one, and when it came to Jason, he picked up his own.
“Aww, that sucks”, Jason said as he sat back with his friends. “I have to begin every morning at 8 o’clock! It couldn’t have been worst.”
“Ha ha”, said Mark. “At least you get to leave early. On mine, I finish three days out of five at 6 o’clock. I’ll be starved when I get home!”
“Yeah, if I could sleep in mid-afternoon, that would be perfect”, Jason said jokingly.
Mark and Jason had physics together, and Sam and Jason would have literature, philo and maths. He had none with Ricky, because he wasn’t in the same program as Mark, Jason and Sam. They talked about it some more, then it was time to head home.
Walking together in the hallway that lead to the front door, Mark shook the fox’s shoulder to get his attention. “Give you a ride?” he said, making his key giggle in front of Jason’ eyes.
“Um, yeah sure”, Jason responded with surprise.
Before they parted ways, Jason couldn’t help reminding Sam. “Just drive carefully Sam!” He said with a satisfied grin on his face. Jason didn’t know why he was still angry; he should have known better, but then again he always thought he could trust the otter even if it wasn’t mutual.
Sam folded his ears down and went silently to the other side of the parking lot, his short tail lashing on the ground.
They walked silently to the parking lot. Jason then spotted a shinny sports car parked at one of the furthest parking spaces, but he could still see enough from where he was to admire his design. The car had silver painting all over, with black and white stripes on the side of the wheels and seemed pretty roomy for a sports car. Jason gasped has he heard his car respond twice to the remote keys of Mark.
Once they got in, Mark just put some loud classic rock music and started showing off by starting his engine and hitting the gas still on park. “Wow, I almost can’t contain myself to actually see it moving. You know, I’m getting kind of hungry!”, Jason said after two minutes of this, carefully locking his seatbelt tight before saying so. It was the first time he’d got into a car where the wolf was on the driver’s seat after all...
“Your wish is my command”, replied Mark by finally putting his engine to drive and starting while making his tires yell out in pain, driving way past the speed limit he noticed, only to stop 4 inches from the stop sign to exit the parking space.
“I like my food better when I’m alive”, said Jason, startled. “You really want to replace your tires after only a week? I’m amazed they didn’t just melt on the road.”
“Relax, I don’t drive like this for real. Just want to prove to you that this baby’s not a junk.” A sly grin appeared in the corner of the wolf’s muzzle.
Both of them went silent to enjoy the music for most of the thirty minutes ride. He wanted to talk so much more about all the things that bothered him but he knew Mark wasn’t the best person to talk to. Sure he would listen and try to understand the fox but it was like talking to a wall. Jason wouldn’t find much comfort in Mark’s voice because each time he tried he would just tell him he worries too much or that it would be fine if he just leaves it alone for a while.
They finally arrived at Jason’s and Mark pulled up in his driveway. “Hey, drive you tomorrow morning?” Mark said while Jason got off and took his backpack.
“Um, sure if it’s not too much trouble...”
“Of course not, silly,” the wolf responded from his opened window as the fox slowly went back inside.
Slapping the door shut behind him, a delicious smell tickled his nose. What was it, something about pasta, maybe spaghetti? ‘Oh great’, Jason thought, ‘family dinner...’ His father was a business man, so he wasn’t home often. He would pop-up every now and then and ask Jason questions like he knew him well. Jason hated his father, mostly because he wasn’t around most of his childhood, but also because he and Jason would have totally different opinions. Most of their talks could easily turn into a fight if he wasn’t careful, and he hated to endure it and say what his father wanted him to say. Jason’s father favourite meal was spaghetti, so that means Mother cooked that especially for him.
“Hey mom, I’m home.”
“You’re home early; wasn’t your meeting supposed to end at five? You didn’t skip it, did you? ”, replied his mother.
“No, I got early because Mark drove me back so I didn’t have to wait for the stupid bus.”
“Ah, I didn’t know Mark had a car. So how did it go? ”, she asked.
“Me neither.” Jason shrugged. “I just got my schedule and I begin every morning at 8. Life is SO unfair!”
“Well, it would make you wake up like everyone else”, she said with a painfully sarcastic tone.
“Whatever”, said Jason, clearly annoyed by that reply. ‘Seriously, I think I haven’t had one day without one of them complaining about my lifestyle, like sleeping in the morning. What’s wrong with that anyway? It doesn’t make me lazy because I hate mornings! I bet that’s what they’re thinking.’
“So, did you meet up with all your friends?”
“Yes, I did”, Jason forced out off his mouth, looking right at him with an angry look.
“How are they? You know, it’s been such a long time since I heard or seen them, I was wondering if they still existed.”
‘Damn him, how could he just fucking ask that? Does he want me to get pissed?’ “They were fine”, Jason said trying to regain his composure.
“Good to hear that, so you still see ‘em. What have Mark been up to lately?"
He sighed. “Like I told you, he had a lot of football practices during the summer. They’ll start the season pretty soon”, Jason said losing a bit of patience.
His brother Raj just came back from soccer practice and was about to sit down at the table, but he caught the tension between him and his father and decided it would be wiser just to wait in his room before dinner.
His father looked at Raj fly through the dining room with a “hi you guy! Just warn me when food’s ready” and went upstairs. When the door closed, he said “don’t start this with me, I’m asking you a question out of curiosity, so I want a decent answer. Why can’t you be like your brother, he is polite and at least he practice a sport. What do you do in your free time, daydreaming?”
That just sets Jason off. “What do you fucking care, you’re not even there!” He was yelling now. “It’s my life and I’ll decide what to do of it. If I don’t like sports, it’s my choice, and if you want me to be like Raj, then you should have thought of it before choosing this crappy job!”
Jason’s mother looked at both of them now without saying a word.
“Now don’t you dare talk to me like that! I try to do what’s best for this family. You know I have to feed all of you, and yet you dare respond to me that way. I try to give you as much education as I could, and if you think you could just do whatever you want and waste your life away, you’re wrong. I’m not gonna pay for you so you’ll just give it up. You know, you spend way too much time on that computer thing!”
“So what, I’m an investment for you? You think that because you pay for things, you can just decide what my life would be?”
“Of course not, no one can decide that. I just feel like me and your mother do all this for nothing. You never talk much when I’m around and your mother feels the same way. You don’t even know yourself what you’ll do. And besides, we hardly see you with people; it’s not healthy you know.”
“And I do this by choice, you think? You don’t know me and you don’t know my life, and I don’t see how telling you will solve anything. We never agree; you never cared about what I’ve been thinking. All you want is for me to play sports, to have a prestigious job and to bring a nice vixen over to dinner”, Jason shouted angrily.
With that, he just bolted out of the dining room and went straight to bedroom. He wasn’t hungry now and he just wanted to get away from his folks because this time again they wouldn’t understand him. It wasn’t worth fighting over that. He was still angry so he decided to pick up his guitar to strum on it. He switched it to electric and just played some loud power chords to help him forget everything; not only about the fight, but about his entire life. His father was partly right; he’d realized it for a long time but couldn’t make it right.
He continued to hit the strings full force, switching from time to time on a different chord. He heard angry knocks at his door, but of course he knew that would happen so he had locked it. After an hour or so, his fingers became sore so he stopped to put on some random music. Astronaut from Simple Plan began to play.
Can anybody hear me?
Am I talking to myself?
My mind is running empty
In the search for someone else
Who doesn't look right through me?
It's all just static in my head
Can anybody tell me why I'm lonely like a satellite?
Jason sense his fingers clench into fists on their own. He didn’t do anything with his life, really. He had no plans, no girlfriend, no reasons to get out of bed in the morning. An on top of that, he felt lonely like hell because he knew his parents would never understand him; neither would his friends. He remembered how many times he called Sam to try to meet him over the summer, but he was either too busy with work or couldn’t get a ride to come by and visit. Right!
Most of his social life during summer concerned Mark, his best friend. They played some videogames together and sometimes went out for some movies, but otherwise they wouldn’t stick around to do anything else. He would be busy most of the time on practices or games of football. Jason didn’t know what to do so he just ignored most of his friends all summer as well.
'Cause tonight I feel like an astronaut
Sending SOS from this tiny box
And I lost all signal when I lifted up
Now I'm stuck out here and the world forgot
Can I please come down, ‘cause I'm tired of drifting round and round
Can I please come down?
The song continued playing. At this point, he couldn’t hold it anymore: he began to cry in his bed. Jason usually didn’t cried, but it was too much pressure to bear because he realized that he really was alone. He felt so different, so left out by this world, even by his family. His father would usually be the one to pick on Jason for more or less serious things at dinner, so his mother took his side most of the time and stood out for him when his father was yelling at him. Now, she just kept silent; that meant she agreed with him and Jason felt like he was betrayed. His tears were flowing full force now as he began to sink his head in his pillow. He just laid there, eyes closed, waiting for sleep to come and make everything go away.
This is only first part: there is going to be many more, as it is yet to be completed. This story is going to contain gay and straight relationship, being part of the fact some of the character would have to face, because they know little about how they feel themselves.
Enjoy!

Chapter 1: School Begins
Jason

This made me soo sad, I never feel understood and when I confessed to my parents I was a furry they weren't supportive, instead jumping to the awkward question of, is this a fetish? I burst into tears I joined the group because I love the fandom but I still feel lonely. I had a girlfriend who passed away, I dread waking up every morning and on the worst days do feel my life is going nowhere.
