And the last of the three, Silver smirking over her shoulder in that coy way of hers.
Her chosen name of 'Silver' was actually kind of a joke similar to her calling herself 'Three'. Casteless were not allowed to wear gold. Only nobility, warriors, and religious caste could wear it, so she chose to call herself after the metal that the lower castes were relegated to.
Casteless consisted of immigrants, fallen houses, and servants and slaves who weren't owned by anyone but who hadn't officially earned their freedom either. If a slave's master died before they could sell a slave off or of a slave served in a fallen house they might end up casteless. The color for casteless was a brownish yellow which was a cheap dye made from the dregs of fodder plants.
If you were successful in life despite being casteless you might demonstrate such by wearing clothing dyed from better materials, or embroidered, or by wearing fancy jewelry. Silver tended for the latter.
It was nice to revisit the world again, although I've come to realize how much I've forgotten already since I've had to open up headspace for other things, but enough is still there.
